Metallics TSF26M – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Metallics TSF26M a sheet metal screw or a wood screw?
It's a Type A tapping screw, #8 diameter by 2-1/2 inches long, with a gimlet point and 15 threads per inch. Type A with a gimlet point is the coarse-thread sheet metal screw style meant to cut its own thread in thin sheet metal, and the sharp point also lets it start in wood and composition board without a pilot in soft material. It is not a drill point screw, so thicker gauge metal needs a pilot hole.
2) How many Metallics TSF26M screws come in a box, and can I buy just a few?
They ship as a box of 1000, and 1000 is the order minimum, so this is a bulk buy rather than a handful. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities are available by request if 2-1/2 inch isn't the length you need.
3) Do these Metallics tapping screws meet the ASME standard our spec calls out?
The TSF26M is built to ASME B18.6.4 for both thread form and dimensions, specifically ASME B18.6.4-1998, with steel per AISI 1016 to 1024. If your submittal names B18.6.4 flat head Phillips tapping screws, this answers it. Note Metallics states that dimensions for #9 diameter screws are independent of ASME B18.6.4; that caveat does not apply to this #8.
4) Are Metallics TSF26M tapping screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The TSF26M is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, these screws won't satisfy it and you'll need a domestically produced fastener.
5) What driver bit do I need for these #8 Phillips flat head tapping screws?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is 0.182 inch in diameter and 0.11 inch deep, so a #1 bit will cam out and a #3 won't seat. If you're running a thousand of these off a drill or impact, keep spare #2 bits on hand.
6) Can I use zinc plated steel tapping screws like the TSF26M outdoors?
Keep them dry. The finish is zinc plating over steel, which is a general indoor and protected-location coating. For exterior exposure, wet locations, or treated lumber, go with a stainless or hot dip galvanized fastener instead.
7) Will these screws snap if I drive them with an impact driver?
Torsional strength is 39 lb-in minimum with a case hardness of Rockwell C28-38, which is the normal case hardened range for a tapping screw. That's enough to cut thread in sheet metal, but a high torque impact driver will twist the head off once the screw bottoms out, especially at 2-1/2 inches of length. Drive at reduced torque and stop as soon as the head seats.
