Metallics JDWC9C – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will #8 x 3 in. coarse thread drywall screws work for fastening into wood studs, or do I need fine thread?
Coarse thread is what you want for wood framing. The Metallics JDWC9C is a coarse (UNC) threaded screw with a sharp point, built for drywall to wood, wood to wood, and cabinet work. Fine thread screws are the ones meant for steel studs. At 3 inches long it is a deep-penetration screw, not a single-layer board screw.
2) Are these black phosphate drywall screws okay for exterior or damp locations?
No. Black phosphate is a dry interior coating, not a corrosion finish. The JDWC9C is steel with a black phosphate finish and its stated applications are interior work: drywall to wood, wood to wood, cabinet installs, and electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades. For exterior or wet exposure, use a coated exterior deck screw or a stainless fastener instead.
3) Can I use Metallics JDWC9C screws on a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The JDWC9C is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your spec carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this is not the fastener for it.
4) Will a bugle head screw sit flush without tearing the drywall paper?
That is what the bugle head is for. The JDWC9C has a tapered bugle head measuring 0.315 to 0.363 in. across with a head height of 0.020 to 0.039 in., so it dimples the board and seats below the surface for mud instead of cutting the face paper the way a flat head does. Note there is no single industry standard for bugle head dimensions, so slight deviations are normal.
5) How are Metallics JDWC9C screws packaged and what is the minimum I have to buy?
They ship in a jar, with a minimum order of 100. The jar weighs 1.12 lbs. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Will these screws snap when I drive them into hardwood blocking?
The JDWC9C is made from AISI 1018 steel case hardened to Rockwell C45-64, which is the normal hardness band for a hardened drywall screw. That hardness is what lets a #8 shank drive without the head shearing, but hardened screws are brittle in shear, so they are fasteners for pulling board and trim tight, not a structural or load-bearing connector.
7) How many threads per inch do these #8 coarse drywall screws have?
8 to 10 threads per inch on the JDWC9C, in a coarse UNC pattern. That wide a pitch gives the big bite you need in softwood framing and keeps the screw from spinning out in the stud when you snug the head into the board.
8) Do I need to pre-drill before driving a 3 inch drywall screw?
Not in framing lumber. The JDWC9C has a sharp point, so it starts itself in wood and gypsum without a pilot hole. In dense hardwood or near the end of a board, a pilot still helps avoid splitting.
