1) Do I still need to thread or weld pipe if I use MegaPress couplings?
No cutting oil, no threading, no welding and no open flame. The 84215 presses onto prepared 1/2 inch steel pipe with a press tool and the matching jaw, which is why it gets used for repairs in occupied buildings where hot work permits are a problem. You cut the pipe square, deburr, mark insertion depth, and press.
2) What is the difference between a MegaPress coupling with a stop and one without a stop?
With a stop, like the 84215, there is an internal ridge in the middle of the coupling so each pipe end stops at the correct depth. That is what you want on new work or when both pipe ends are free to move. A coupling without a stop (a slip or repair coupling) lets the fitting slide along the pipe, which is what you need when you are patching a fixed section and cannot pull the pipe apart.
