The 84545 MegaPress tee is a 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch x 1/2 inch reducing tee. The two 3/4 inch ends are press connections that go onto the run, and the 1/2 inch branch is female pipe thread. So you keep a 3/4 inch main line running and take a threaded 1/2 inch branch off it.
2) What kind of pipe do the pressed ends of the Viega 84545 tee go on?
MegaPress fittings are carbon steel and press onto black iron/carbon steel pipe, and the 84545 is built for 3/4 inch on both run ends. It is a carbon steel fitting, so it belongs on a steel pipe system, not on copper or PEX.
3) Why would a contractor use a press tee instead of threading or welding a 3/4 inch steel branch?
Pressing a 3/4 inch steel branch with the 84545 takes a jaw and a press tool, no flame and no pipe threading on the run. That matters in occupied buildings where a hot work permit is a problem. The tradeoff: you need the correct MegaPress jaw for 3/4 inch, and the fitting is one size only, so you cannot field-adjust it the way you can with a nipple and coupling.
4) Is the Viega 84545 a full-size 3/4 inch tee or a reducing tee?
It reduces. The run stays 3/4 inch through both press ends and only the branch drops to 1/2 inch. If you need a 3/4 inch branch, this is the wrong fitting, and if the run itself is 1/2 inch it will not press on at all.
