Philips Lighting 458380 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to remove the ballast to install the Philips 8.5W LED PL-C lamp?
No rewiring needed. The Philips 8.5W PL-C LED is a UL Type A lamp, meaning it runs on the existing CFL ballast. You pull the old 4-pin PL-C lamp and plug this one into the same G24q socket. That also means the lamp only works as long as the ballast works: if the ballast fails, the lamp stops, and you replace or bypass the ballast at that point.
2) Will this LED fit a G24d two-pin socket, or does it need the 4-pin G24q?
It needs a 4-pin G24q socket. The base is G24q, which is the 4-pin pin-and-groove base used on PL-C lamps run by an electronic ballast. A G24d 2-pin socket has different keying and is wired for a magnetic ballast with integral starter, so this lamp will not seat in it. Check the socket on the fixture before you order a case.
3) Which CFL wattages does this 8.5W PL-C LED replace?
It covers the 8.5W to 26W PL-C range, so it is the drop-in for 13W, 18W and 26W 4-pin compact fluorescents on an electronic ballast. At 8.5W drawing 900 lumens, you get roughly the light of a 26W CFL for about a third of the load.
4) Will this lamp actually dim on my existing system?
The lamp itself is dimmable, but on a Type A lamp the dimming is done by the ballast, not the lamp. You need an existing dimmable electronic CFL ballast and a control matched to it. Drop it into a non-dimming ballast and it runs at full output. The lamp accepts ballast output from 150 mA to 550 mA across a 20,000 to 100,000 Hz input frequency range.
5) Is 3500K going to match the other lamps in my building?
3500K is neutral white, the middle ground between 3000K warm and 4000K cool. The color code is 835, meaning 80-plus CRI at 3500K, with an actual CRI of 82 and color consistency under 6 SDCM so lamps in adjacent fixtures won't visibly differ. If your corridors are currently running 841 or 830 CFLs, this will read noticeably different next to them, so change out a whole space at a time rather than one fixture.
6) Can I use this PL-C LED in an unheated parking garage or a hot ceiling plenum?
Ambient operating range is -20 C to 45 C, with a maximum case temperature of 60 C. That covers an unheated garage or vestibule in most climates, but a tight enclosed downlight in a hot plenum can push past 45 C ambient and shorten life. Storage range is wider, -40 C to 65 C, so cold warehouse stock is fine.
7) Does this Philips PL-C LED qualify for a utility rebate?
It carries DLC Standard listing, which is the qualification most utility prescriptive rebate programs require for LED lamps. It is also EU RoHS compliant. Your utility will still want the specific model number, 458380, on their qualified products list at the time of application.
8) Is this bright enough for a hallway downlight, and how does the light spread?
900 lumens at a 120 degree nominal beam angle, so it throws a wide wash rather than a spot. The frosted plastic bulb diffuses the output, which keeps glare down in open downlights and wraps. Efficacy is 105 lm/W. For corridor and common area general lighting that is a straight swap for a 26W CFL; for anything needing a tight beam, this is the wrong lamp type.
9) What voltage and power factor should I spec this PL-C LED at for a panel load calculation?
Nominal voltage is 120 V with a power factor of 0.9 at 8.5 W rated power. Running the lamp off an existing electronic ballast, the ballast's own input rating governs the circuit calculation, so use ballast input watts rather than lamp watts when you total a branch circuit.
