Viega 91690 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Viega MegaPress 91690 tee connect?
The Viega 91690 MegaPress tee is a reducing tee sized 2 inch x 2 inch x 1-1/2 inch, so the run is 2 inch on both ends and the branch takes 1-1/2 inch pipe. All three outlets are press connections (P1 x P2 x P3), not threaded or grooved, so each one is made with a press tool and jaw matched to that size.
2) Is the Viega 91690 MegaPress tee stainless or carbon steel, and where can I use it?
It is 316 stainless steel, the corrosion-resistant grade used where carbon steel MegaPress would not hold up, such as chemically aggressive or wet environments. If your system is black iron or carbon steel schedule pipe and you only need a standard press fitting, the carbon steel MegaPress version is the usual choice; the 316 body here is what you specify when the media or the environment demands stainless.
3) Can I press the 1-1/2 inch branch with the same jaw I use for the 2 inch run?
No. Press jaws and rings are size-specific, so the two 2 inch ends and the 1-1/2 inch branch on this tee need their own tooling. If you are carrying a 2 inch MegaPress setup only, add the 1-1/2 inch jaw or ring before you get to the job, otherwise the branch connection cannot be completed.
4) How much clearance do I need to install a 2 inch MegaPress tee in a tight chase?
Plan around the fitting's own envelope: 7.646 inches long, 5.157 inches wide, 2.894 inches high. On top of that you need room to get the press jaw fully around each of the three connections and rotate the tool, so measure from the fitting face out, not from the pipe centerline. At 2.398 lbs it is light enough to hold in place single-handed while pressing.
5) What does Smart Connect mean on a Viega MegaPress fitting?
Smart Connect is Viega's feature that deliberately leaks at an unpressed connection during pressure testing, so an installer or inspector can find the joint that was missed before the wall closes up. On a three-outlet fitting like the 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 tee that matters more than on a coupling, because it is easy to press the run and overlook the branch.
