Viega 95875 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Viega MegaPress 95875 union connect?
The 95875 MegaPress union joins 1-1/4 inch to 1-1/4 inch, press on both ends (P1 x P2). It is a same-size union, so it will not step a line up or down; for a size change you need a reducing fitting instead.
2) Is the Viega 95875 MegaPress union carbon steel or stainless?
It is 304 stainless steel. That matters when you pick it: MegaPress comes in both carbon steel and stainless bodies, and mixing a carbon steel fitting onto a stainless system is a corrosion problem. The 95875 is the stainless one, made in Germany.
3) Do I need to thread or weld the Viega 95875, or is it a press fitting?
No threading, no welding, no open flame. Both ends of this 1-1/4 inch union are press connections, so you cut the pipe, deburr, mark depth, insert and press with a MegaPress jaw. That is why it gets specified in occupied buildings where a hot work permit is a problem.
4) What does Smart Connect technology do on this Viega union?
Smart Connect is the feature on the 95875 that makes an unpressed connection leak visibly during test, so an installer finds the missed joint at pressure test rather than after the ceiling is closed. On a large press job that is the difference between a punch item and a callback.
5) Why use a union instead of just pressing two MegaPress couplings together?
A union gives you a disconnect point. Press joints are permanent, so with couplings alone you have to cut the pipe to pull a pump, valve or piece of equipment. Setting the 95875 union at the equipment means you break the joint, service, and reassemble without touching the pipe.
6) How much clearance do I need to install the 1-1/4 inch MegaPress union?
The fitting body itself is 6.524 inches long, 2.992 inches wide and 2.756 inches high, and it weighs 2.409 lbs. Plan for that plus room to swing the press jaw around both ends, which is the real constraint in a tight joist bay or against a wall.
7) What part number do I order for the Viega 1-1/4 inch stainless MegaPress union?
Order Viega 95875. That number covers the 1-1/4 inch by 1-1/4 inch 304 stainless MegaPress union with Smart Connect, and it is a single configuration, no finish or option to specify.
