1) Is the SMP7 a bare board or does it come in an enclosure?
The SMP7 is supplied as a board, not a boxed unit. Plan on an existing enclosure or a separate Altronix can with the right standoff pattern, plus your own transformer and AC feed, before the install is complete.
2) I need to sequence an electric latch retraction and a door operator, not just power them. What board handles that?
Sequencing is a control function, not a power function. The Altronix SMP7 supplies 12 or 24VDC at 6A and does not itself time the operation of connected devices. For timed sequencing, Command Access offers the DS1-X multi-function door sequencing relay board with 13 programmable functions, or the simpler DS1+ delay/sequencer board with bi-directional control for 12-24VDC. In most openings the supply board and the sequencer board are both present, with the sequencer taking its operating voltage from the supply.
3) Can I use the SMP7 board for access control locking hardware, or is it just a general power supply?
It is used as access power for electrified door hardware, which is why it is catalogued with access power controllers. It supplies the raw 12 or 24VDC at up to 6A; it does not itself sequence doors or switch outputs on a card read. For that you add a relay or sequencing board downstream.
4) For a commercial access control cabinet, which board is the power source and which are the add-ons?
The Altronix SMP7 is the power source: a commercial-duty switching power supply board that converts a 28VAC input into a selectable 12 or 24VDC output rated at 6A for access control and security loads. The Command Access boards in the same family of parts are accessories to that power, not alternatives to it - the DS1+ is a delay and sequencer board for 12-24VDC, the DS1-X adds 13 programmable sequencing functions, and the VD2-873 is a replacement relay board for the Von Duprin PS873. Spec the supply first, then add the control board the opening requires.
5) Is the SMP7 suitable for residential use or is it a commercial product?
It is a commercial-duty board, intended for professional security and access installs rather than residential work. Commercial jurisdictions typically want the power supply mounted in a listed enclosure and fed from a dedicated circuit.
