American Standard M951480-0070A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the American Standard M951480 thermostatic diverter actually do?
It's a two-way thermostatic diverter, meaning it takes the tempered water coming off a thermostatic valve and sends it to one of two outlets. The thermostatic element holds the mix at temperature while the diverter decides which of the two outlets gets it. It is a replacement part, not a complete valve body or trim kit.
2) What is the manufacturer part number for the American Standard 2-way thermostatic diverter?
Order it by American Standard part number M951480-0070A. That is the number to quote when matching a service part to an existing American Standard thermostatic shower valve, and the one your counter or spec sheet should show.
3) Does the M951480 diverter come in a specific finish, or do I order the trim separately?
It ships unfinished. The M951480-0070A is supplied as NO FINISH, so it is the working internal component rather than an exposed decorative piece. If the job needs a visible handle or escutcheon in chrome, brushed nickel or similar, that comes from the trim kit for your valve, not from this part.
4) I'm a property manager replacing a shower diverter cartridge across several units. Is this the right part to standardize on?
Only if the openings are already American Standard thermostatic valves that call out M951480-0070A. This is a brand-specific service component for American Standard thermostatic systems, so it will not cross over to a Moen, Delta or Kohler body. Pull the model off one existing valve and confirm the part number matches before you buy a run of them.
5) Is a two-way thermostatic diverter the same thing as a pressure-balance diverter?
No. A pressure-balance device only reacts to pressure swings between hot and cold, while a thermostatic diverter like the M951480 holds a set outlet temperature and splits flow between two outlets. If your valve body is pressure-balance, this is not the service part for it. Match the diverter type to the valve body you already have in the wall.
