American Standard 1662647.002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What connections do I need at the wall for the American Standard 1662647 slide bar shower kit?
The wall supply elbow takes a 1/2-inch NPT female inlet, so it threads onto standard 1/2-inch male pipe or a stub-out with a 1/2-inch NPT nipple. The outlet side is 1/2-inch NPSM male, which is what the shower hose nut mates to. No adapters are needed if your rough-in ends in 1/2-inch NPT.
2) Does this American Standard shower kit have backflow protection for cross connection?
The kit includes double check valves to prevent cross flow of hot and cold water. That is the protection inspectors look for on a handshower assembly, since a hose-connected outlet can otherwise siphon back into the supply.
3) Is the shower valve included, or do I need to buy that separately?
This is a slide bar kit, not a valve. You get the wall supply elbow, hose, handshower, 30-inch bar and holder with the double check valves. The mixing valve and its trim are a separate purchase, and the supply elbow simply threads onto 1/2-inch NPT piping downstream of it.
4) How long is the hose and bar on the American Standard 1662647 kit?
The bar is 30 inches (762 mm) and the hose is 59 inches (1500 mm). That hose length gives enough reach to hand-bathe a child or wash down a tub surround from outside the enclosure, and the 30-inch bar gives a wide height range for users of different heights sharing one shower.
5) Can the handshower holder be moved up and down after it's installed?
Yes. The holder slides to any height or position along the 30-inch bar and tilts up to 45 degrees, so spray angle and height are set by hand without tools. That is what makes it workable for multi-family units where tenants vary in height.
6) What is the flow rate on the American Standard 1662647 handshower?
It is rated 1.8 gpm (6.8 L/min) with three spray functions. The 1.8 gpm rate is the low-flow tier used where water conservation limits apply, and it matters if you are standardizing fixture flow across a building.
7) Can I use this slide bar kit on a tub as well as a shower?
Yes, it is intended for shower and tub applications. The 59-inch hose and sliding holder let it serve a tub/shower combination, where the handshower is pulled down for tub use and parked high for standing showers.
8) What finish does the American Standard 1662647 slide bar kit come in?
Chrome, ordered as part number 1662647.002. If the rest of the trim in the bath is polished chrome, this matches; there is no brushed or matte black option in this kit.
