Flash Shower Rough-In Valve With PEX Inlet Elbows/Universal Outlets With Screwdriver Stops for Crimp Ring System

American Standard RU107ESS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the American Standard RU107ESS shower valve include the cartridge, or do I need to order that separately?
The cartridge is not in the box with the rough-in. On the RU107ESS, the cartridge ships with the trim kit, so you order the trim separately and the cartridge comes with it. The rough-in body arrives with a flush plug and test cap arrangement instead, which is what you want during construction anyway since you can pressure test and flush the lines without a cartridge installed.
2) What size and type of PEX does this American Standard Flash rough-in valve connect to?
It comes with 1/2 inch PEX crimp elbow inlets and universal outlets built to ASTM F1807, so it ties straight into a 1/2 inch PEX crimp ring system with no adapters. Fewer fittings at the valve means fewer leak points in the wall. If you are running copper sweat or press, this is the wrong body for that job.
3) How deep can I set this shower valve behind the finished wall?
The rough-in range runs 1-3/4 inch to 2-3/4 inch measured from the finished wall to the back of the valve. That inch of adjustment covers most framing and backer combinations, so you can set the body on the cross brace and still land the trim correctly whether you finish in tile over cement board or a thinner surround.
4) Can this valve be installed with the water supplies coming down from the ceiling instead of up from the floor?
Yes. The body is symmetrical, so it can be rotated 180 degrees to take supply lines from either the floor or the ceiling. It also handles back-to-back installs, where hot and cold get reversed, without a special order body.
5) Can I pressure test the shower rough-in before the cartridge goes in?
That is what the flush plug is for. With the plug in place you can test with air at 200 psi or water at 300 psi, and flush the lines without cross flow between hot and cold. No need to install and then pull the cartridge just to test, which is the usual way cartridges get damaged on a jobsite.
6) Does this American Standard rough-in have stops so I can service the shower without shutting off the building water?
Yes, screwdriver stops are included on the RU107ESS. For a property manager or maintenance crew that matters: you isolate hot and cold right at the valve to change a cartridge, instead of killing water to a riser or the whole unit.
7) Is the valve body brass, and will it hold up in water with high chloride?
The body is cast DZR brass, dezincification resistant, chosen specifically to resist corrosion where chloride levels and pH run high. That is the reason to spec it over a plain brass or plastic body in coastal, well, or heavily treated municipal water.
8) Will this rough-in mount solidly in a thin wall or on a cross brace?
The back of the body is flat so it sits flush against a cross brace for a solid mount. The plaster guard protects the valve during rock and tile work, acts as a depth guide, and can carry the mounting support in a thin-wall installation.
9) How does the test cap and cartridge get held in place on this valve?
A stainless steel retaining ring with flats secures the test cap or cartridge, so there are no screws to fuss with. The flats let you get a wrench on the ring and back it off quickly when you swap the test cap out for the cartridge at trim-out.
