American Standard Ovalyn Universal Access Undermount Sink - AMS-9482000

The Ovalyn Universal Access bowl measures 16-3/4 inches (425 mm) wide by 13-1/4 inches (337 mm) front to back, with an overall bowl depth of 5-1/2 inches (140 mm) and a 4 inch (102 mm) water depth. The shallow 4 inch bowl is what makes it work under an ADA-style counter where knee clearance under the lavatory is tight, since a deeper bowl eats into that space.

The under counter mounting kit and a cutout template ship with the sink, so a fabricator has what they need to set it. What is not included is the faucet, the drain assembly, and the P-trap - those are ordered separately, and the faucet mounts in the countertop rather than the sink since the Ovalyn has no deck or faucet holes.

Only if your existing cutout is sized to this bowl. Measure it against the 16-3/4 inch by 13-1/4 inch bowl footprint plus the rim you need for clamping - the sink ships with its own template, and that template is what the cutout has to be cut or verified to. On an undermount you cannot enlarge a cutout upward, and a cutout larger than the rim leaves the sink unsupported, so an oversized existing opening usually means a new countertop or a larger sink.

The Ovalyn has an unglazed rim, which means the rim is meant to be hidden under the counter and sealed - it is not finished to be looked at. That points it at a solid surface, quartz, granite, or marble top where the cutout edge is polished and the sink is clamped and siliconed from below. Laminate is a poor match for any undermount because the exposed particleboard core at the cutout will swell once water reaches it.

The Ovalyn is vitreous china, the same fired, glazed material used on commercial lavatories and water closets. It cleans with standard restroom chemicals, does not stain or hold odor, and holds up to heavy public traffic. The tradeoff versus stainless is that china chips if something heavy is dropped in the bowl, and a chip in china cannot be buffed out.

An undermount like the Ovalyn hangs below the counter and is clamped from underneath, so the countertop surface runs uninterrupted to the bowl edge and you can wipe water straight in. A drop-in sets on top with a finished rim resting on the counter, which is simpler to install and works on laminate, but leaves a raised rim and a caulk joint that collects grime. For restrooms where cleanability is the priority, undermount is the usual specification; for a fast fixture swap on an existing laminate top, a drop-in is the practical choice.

White only, ordered as part number 9482000.02. There is no bone, linen, or color option on this model, so if you are standardizing a building's restrooms on a colored china fixture, the Ovalyn Universal Access will not match.
