The hanger fastens to the wall or backing, and the slotted back of the lav drops onto it so the bowl hangs level and the weight transfers into the wall rather than the supply or drain lines. It is a repair part, so it is what you order when the original hanger is corroded, bent, or missing after a sink is pulled off a wall.

It has to match. A lav hanger engages a slot or lip cast into the back of that specific bowl, and the hook profile and length vary by model, so a hanger from a different sink either will not seat or will leave the bowl sitting proud of the wall. The S-9 hanger, part 382430-1120A, is the American Standard replacement for the lav it was built for. If you are replacing the bowl as well as the bracket, buy the hanger that ships with or is specified for the new lav.
