Baldwin SC.COLxROU.TRR.003 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What backset does the Baldwin Columbus handleset use, and will it fit my existing door prep?
The Columbus handleset works on either a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops onto the two standard residential preps without redrilling the cross bore. The edge bore is 1 inch, which is the standard latch bore on a prepped door. If your door is already bored for a common residential entry lock and deadbolt, the handleset lands on that prep.
2) Do I have to order the Baldwin Columbus handleset handed?
Only if you choose a lever for the inside trim. The curve, decorative and federal levers are each ordered left hand or right hand, so you need to know which way the door swings and which side the hinges are on before you order. The three knob choices (ellipse, round and traditional) are not handed and work either way. The exterior grip itself is not a handing decision.
3) Can I key the Baldwin Reserve Columbus handleset alike with the other doors on the house?
Yes. Keyed alike or keyed different is a selection at order time, and if you already have Baldwin cylinders on the property you can supply the existing key code so the new handleset matches. Baldwin ships the 5-pin C keyway as standard, so keying alike works with other Baldwin C keyway locks. Order everything you want on one key in a single order so the factory pins them together.
4) Does the Baldwin Columbus handleset include the interior trim or do I have to buy that separately?
Both halves are included. You get the exterior grip with the keyed cylinder and the interior trim, so it's a complete entrance set out of one box. You do choose the interior knob or lever style and the rose shape when you order. That's different from something like the Kwikset 687 Amador, which we sell as an exterior-only handleset and needs interior trim bought alongside it.
5) What is a Grade 2 alternative to the Baldwin Reserve Columbus handleset?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is tested to exceed ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 in a residential application. Peers carrying a stated Grade 2 rating include the Master Lock HDLBA0615/4D single cylinder deadbolt handleset from the HDLB Series, the Schlage Residential F60 Addison in the F Series, and the Schlage Residential JE285 Barcelona handleset with Seville lever in the J Series - though the JE285 is a non-keyed entry function, so it does not stand in for a keyed opening. The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is Grade 3.
6) What is the difference between the Baldwin Reserve Columbus handleset and the Emtek 3002 Memphis?
They do different jobs. The Emtek 3002 Memphis brass mortise entrance handleset is a dummy - it is surface applied trim with no cylinder and no latch, used on the inactive leaf of a pair or on a door that does not need to lock. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is a keyed single cylinder entry handleset with a key on the exterior and a thumbturn inside operating the deadbolt, and it ships with both the interior and exterior for a complete entrance. If a matching dummy is wanted alongside a keyed opening, the Emtek Hamilton 3004, Melrose 3005 and Manhattan 3006 are dummy handlesets in the same family, and the Weslock 2815 Hillcrest with New Heaven lever is a dummy as well.
7) What handleset should I use instead if the door needs a keypad or app control?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is mechanical - a keyed C-Keyway cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside. For an electronic opening, the Kwikset 815SCEHFL-CP913CNT San Clemente handleset pairs Halifax lever interior trim with a contemporary SmartCode keypad electronic deadbolt on a 1-3/4 inch door. The Yale Real Living BYRD226CBARX Assure Lock puts a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth touchscreen deadbolt behind a Ridgefield handleset for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the BYRD226NRRX is the same Ridgefield handleset with a standalone touchscreen deadbolt for doors that have no network to join.
8) Single cylinder versus double cylinder handleset - which do I need for a door with glass next to it?
Single cylinder means a key outside and a thumbturn inside. The Columbus is that configuration: the deadbolt throws with a key on the exterior or the turn on the interior. That's what most entries use and it's what fire egress favors, since nobody needs a key to get out. The tradeoff is that a door with glass in it or a sidelight within arm's reach can be defeated by breaking the glass and reaching the turn. If that's your opening, a double cylinder (key both sides) is the answer, and check local egress code first.
9) Can I get a different finish inside than outside on a Baldwin handleset?
Yes. The interior comes in the same finish as the exterior by default, but split finish is available if you specify both finishes when ordering. That's how you match a dark exterior to a painted or nickel interior scheme. Eight finishes to pick from: polished brass PVD, satin brass PVD, polished nickel PVD, venetian bronze, satin nickel, matte antique nickel, satin black and polished chrome.
10) Is there a simpler single cylinder handleset than the Baldwin Reserve Columbus?
Yes. The Pamex FS7P31 Lexington single cylinder handleset is an entry function handleset supplied in satin nickel for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, a single fixed configuration. The Weslock 2810 Hillcrest single cylinder handleset with Hudson knob is another, covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is configured rather than fixed: eight finishes from polished brass PVD through satin black, nine inside knob and lever styles, and three rose shapes in traditional arch, round and square. If the opening needs one finish and one interior trim with no matching to do, the fixed handlesets get there with fewer decisions.
11) I only need to replace the exterior handleset, not the interior trim - what are my options?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is sold as a complete entrance with both interior and exterior included, and the interior comes in the same finish as the exterior unless a split finish is specified. When only the outside half is being replaced, the Kwikset 687AMD Amador single cylinder keyed entry handleset is supplied exterior only, in a SmartKey version and in an SC1 keyway SmartKey version, both Grade 3 for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Kwikset 687BW Belleview is the same exterior-only arrangement in a different escutcheon shape.
12) What solid brass handlesets compare to the Baldwin Reserve Columbus?
Deltana offers several solid brass entry handlesets: the 803871B Hanover, the 815871 St. Ann and the 825871 Kingston are all entry function solid brass handlesets, and the 810871 Montego covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is a traditional design entry handleset offered in eight finishes including polished brass PVD, satin brass PVD and venetian bronze, with the choice of traditional arch, round or square rose behind the interior trim - the finish and rose combination is where the two lines diverge for a buyer matching existing hardware.
13) Can I use the Schlage JI18/19 interconnected lock in place of a keyed entry handleset?
Not as a like-for-like swap. The Schlage Residential JI18/19 is an interconnected passage lock with a keyed deadbolt and Torino lever in satin stainless steel - the lever is passage function, so the lever never locks and the security is entirely in the separate deadbolt above it. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is an entry function handleset with the key in the exterior grip escutcheon and a thumbturn inside, bored for a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1 inch edge bore. The two prep the door differently and present a completely different exterior, so a JI18/19 substitution means new boring and a different look on the outside face.
14) Is the Weslock 6695 Belmont handleset a substitute for the Baldwin Reserve Columbus?
No. The Weslock 6695 Belmont with Impresa knob is a dummy handleset in the Elegance Series for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch - it has no cylinder and does not latch or lock. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is keyed, with a single cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside operating the deadbolt. If a keyed Weslock is what is wanted, the 2810 Hillcrest with Hudson knob and the 1411 Traditionale Colonial with Eleganti knob are both single cylinder function.
15) I want the handleset look without a key on the front door - what are the options?
The Schlage Residential JE285 Barcelona style handleset with Seville lever is a non-keyed entry function handleset in the J Series, Grade 2, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. For a key-free opening that still secures, the Yale Real Living BYRD256 CBARX pairs a key free touchscreen deadbolt with a Ridgefield passage handleset and trim for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus takes the other path - a keyed C-Keyway cylinder outside with a thumbturn inside, which is what a buyer wants when the property is on a mechanical key system.
16) What rose shapes and interior handle styles can I get on the Baldwin Reserve Columbus?
Three rose shapes on the interior trim: traditional arch, traditional round and traditional square. That pairs with nine handle choices, three knobs (ellipse, round, traditional) and six handed lever options (curve, decorative and federal, each left and right hand). Square rose reads cleaner on a modern interior, round and arch suit trim that's already traditional. The rose is the escutcheon shape behind the handle, so match it to what's on the adjacent doors if you're keeping a house consistent.
17) Will the Baldwin Reserve Columbus match other Baldwin Reserve hardware already on the building?
It's part of the Reserve Series with a traditional design, and it uses Baldwin's standard 5-pin C keyway, so it keys into an existing Baldwin C keyway system and shares the Reserve finish range. If you're standardizing a property, the eight finishes and the choice of knob or lever on the interior let you carry one look across the entries while keeping the same key.
