Blanco 512471 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Blanco Solon compost system mount into a countertop?
The Solon organic waste system installs two ways: flushmount, sitting level with the counter surface, or drop-in. The bin itself hangs below the counter so the waste sits out of sight, with only the lid visible on top. Pick flushmount when you want a continuous counter surface (common with stone tops that can be recessed), drop-in when the lid rim sits on the deck.
2) Is the Blanco Solon a garbage disposal replacement or a separate compost collector?
It is a collection system, not a grinder. The Solon is an under-counter compartment that stores organic waste until you carry it out to a compost pile or municipal organics bin. If the goal is to send food waste down the drain instead, you want a disposer at the sink drain, which is a different product entirely. Specifiers doing green building or waste-diversion programs use the Solon alongside the sink rather than in place of disposal plumbing.
3) Will the Blanco Solon keep compost smells out of the kitchen?
Odor control is the point of the lid. The Solon lid is built to seal the compartment so odors stay trapped inside the bin rather than escaping into the room, which is what makes it workable for food scraps like coffee grounds and egg shells sitting under the counter between emptyings.
4) What is the Blanco Solon compost bin made of, and can the insert go in the dishwasher?
It is made from high grade recycled stainless steel, and it is dishwasher safe. That matters for multi-family and hospitality use where a food waste container has to be sanitized on a routine, not just wiped out.
5) What finish does the Blanco Solon SOL512471COM come in, and what is the manufacturer part number?
One configuration: stainless steel finish, manufacturer part number 512471. There is no alternate finish or size in the Solon dual mount compost system, so the order is a single line item.
6) Can the Blanco Solon be used for general trash and not just compost?
Yes. Blanco describes it as doing double duty, a practical waste storage compartment as well as a composting tool, so it works as a concealed under-counter waste chute for everyday kitchen scraps.
