ABB CPL Series Rigid Steel Conduit Coupling, PVC-Coated Gray

The ABB CPL Series PVC-Coated Rigid Steel Conduit Coupling joins sections of rigid steel conduit while providing corrosion-protected connections for harsh, wet, or chemically aggressive environments. Built on a galvanized rigid steel base, this gray coupling combines a minimum .040 inch (40 mil) PVC coating bonded to the exterior with a nominal .002 inch (2 mil) blue urethane coating on the interior and threads. Straight NPS threads and pressure-sealing sleeves work together to protect every joint, making this coupling a dependable choice for demanding conduit runs.

Key Features

  • Coupling Size: 2 Inch/53 Metric, with 1.94 Inch/49.19 Millimeters minimum length of metal and 5.94 Inch/150.79 Millimeters total minimum length including sleeve.
  • Durable Construction: Galvanized rigid steel base delivers corrosion-protected connections between conduit sections.
  • Dual-Layer Coating Protection: Minimum .040 inch (40 mil) PVC coating bonded to the exterior plus nominal .002 inch (2 mil) blue urethane coating on the interior and threads.
  • Straight Threads (NPS): Standard straight NPS threading for secure, compatible rigid steel conduit connections.
  • Pressure-Sealing Sleeves: Protect the connection and help maintain a sealed joint at the coupling.
  • Installation-Friendly Design: Molded ribs on the outer coating simplify installation on sizes up to and including 4 inch.
  • Finish: Gray exterior coating.

Ocal CPL3/4-G – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What trade sizes does the ABB CPL Series PVC-coated conduit coupling come in?
Six sizes are offered in the CPL Series: 3/4 inch (CPL3/4-G), 1 inch (CPL1-G), 1-1/4 inch (CPL11/4-G), 1-1/2 inch (CPL11/2-G), 2 inch (CPL2-G) and 3 inch (CPL3-G). Order by the model that matches the rigid steel conduit trade size you are joining, since the coupling threads onto both conduit ends and there is no adapting between sizes.
2) Will a PVC-coated coupling thread onto standard rigid steel conduit I already have on the job?
Yes. The CPL coupling is threaded and uses straight NPS threads, the same threading found on rigid steel conduit, so it joins standard RMC sections. The base is galvanized rigid steel, with the coating applied over it, so the thread engagement itself is steel on steel.
3) Why use a PVC-coated conduit coupling instead of a plain galvanized one?
Corrosion is the whole reason. A standard galvanized coupling relies on zinc alone; the CPL adds a minimum .040 inch (40 mil) PVC coating bonded to the exterior plus a nominal .002 inch (2 mil) blue urethane coating on the interior and threads, so both the outside and the thread area are protected. That matters in wastewater plants, chemical processing, coastal sites, and underground or wet runs. On a dry indoor run in a clean environment, plain galvanized couplings do the same mechanical job for less work.
4) How much length does the 2 inch CPL coupling add to my conduit run?
On the 2 inch coupling (CPL2-G), the minimum length of metal is 1.94 inch (49.19 mm) and the total minimum length including the sleeve is 5.94 inch (150.79 mm). Lay out to the 5.94 inch figure, not the metal length, because the sealing sleeves extend well past the coupling body onto the conduit and you need clear pipe there.
5) How does the CPL coupling keep water out of the joint at the coupling?
Two things do the work. The coupling has pressure-sealing sleeves that cover and seal the joint where the conduit enters, and the interior and threads carry the blue urethane coating so the metal inside the connection is not left bare. That is how the PVC system maintains a continuous corrosion barrier across a coupled joint instead of stopping at each fitting.
6) Do I need special tools or a strap wrench to install a PVC-coated coupling?
The outer coating is molded with ribs that give you something to grip, and ABB states those ribs simplify installation on sizes up to and including 4 inch, which covers every CPL size offered (3/4 inch through 3 inch). Standard practice on coated conduit still applies: grip the ribs rather than crushing the PVC with pipe wrench teeth.
7) Can I use this coupling on underground or direct-buried conduit?
Underground conduit systems are among the applications ABB lists for the CPL coupling, along with outdoor runs. The 40 mil bonded PVC exterior plus the urethane on the threads is the reason: buried joints are where uncoated steel couplings fail first.
8) Is this coupling for rigid steel conduit or for EMT?
Rigid steel only. The CPL is a threaded coupling built on a galvanized rigid steel base with straight NPS threads, so it mates with threaded RMC or IMC ends. EMT is not threaded and needs set-screw or compression couplings instead.
9) Will the gray CPL coupling match the PVC-coated conduit already installed in our plant?
The CPL exterior coating is gray, which is the common color for PVC-coated rigid steel systems, so it will visually match a gray coated conduit run. If your existing system is the other common finish (blue or another color), the coupling will still function identically but will not match in appearance.
