1) Can I use an ABH A528 edge guard on a fire rated door?
Yes, and the rating limit depends on the door. The A528 edge guards are UL fire rated for wood or plastic covered wood composite fire doors rated up to and including 1-1/2 hours, and for hollow metal or steel covered composite fire doors rated up to and including 3 hours. A wood door carrying a 3 hour label is outside what this guard is listed for.
2) What is the difference between the ABH A528SM and A528BM edge guards?
Edge geometry, and it has to match the door. The A528SM is the square edge version and the A528BM is the bevel edge version. A door with a beveled lock edge (the usual bevel on a swinging commercial door) takes the A528BM; a flat, square-edged door takes the A528SM.
