Our Diskus® 26 padlock consists of a solid steel body. The solid interior provides even more security. The cylinder is protected against attempts to drill it or pull it out. The seam that holds the two stainless steel housing pieces together on the Diskus® 26 is also hand-welded. ABUS 26/80 KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I get several ABUS Diskus 26/80 padlocks that all open with the same key?
Yes. The 26/80 is offered keyed alike in three ABUS key sets, EE 0113, EE 0123 and EE 0146. Order every lock on the same key set number and one key runs them all, which is what you want when one driver or one maintenance tech has to open a run of gates, cellar doors and truck boxes. If you need each lock on its own key instead, order the keyed different version.
2) I need padlocks on my facility's interchangeable core system. Is the ABUS Diskus 26/80 the right choice?
No. The 26/80 comes with its own ABUS cylinder and key sets, so it will not accept a core from your existing system. If you need the padlock keyed into a small format interchangeable core program, look at the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock with the 2 inch stainless shackle instead. Use the Diskus where attack resistance on an exposed opening matters more than sharing the building keyway.
3) Which padlock should I use instead of the ABUS 26/80 if my facility is standardized on interchangeable core keying?
Use the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock, which takes a removable core and carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so it folds into an existing SFIC master key system and lets you rekey by pulling the core. The ABUS 26/80 Diskus is a fixed-cylinder lock ordered keyed different or keyed alike in EE 0113, EE 0123 or EE 0146, so keying is set at time of order rather than changed in the field.
4) Is there a padlock like the ABUS 26/80 that does not hold the key captive while unlocked?
Yes. The ABUS 26/80 Diskus is key retaining - the key is needed to lock it and stays in the lock until it is locked, which keeps an open lock from being left unsecured. If you want the key free while the lock is open, the Sargent 858 is non-key retaining with a stainless steel shackle in a US4 satin brass finish, and the Sargent 82-856 is non-key retaining with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. The Sargent 758 is the key retaining counterpart in US4 satin brass if you want that behavior in a conventional shackle body.
5) Why would I use a round Diskus padlock instead of a standard rectangular body padlock?
The round shape is the point. The Diskus 26 shackle is recessed into the body so there is almost nothing for bolt cutters or a pry bar to grab, and the disc gives 360 degree protection all the way around. A conventional padlock like the Sargent 758 or the Schlage KS23D exposes the shackle above the case, which is where most attacks land. Pick the Diskus when the lock hangs outdoors on a gate, trailer or cellar door and is exposed to attack; pick a conventional body when you need a keyway that matches an existing building masterkey system.
6) Does the key come out of the ABUS 26/80 while the padlock is open?
No. The 26/80 is key retaining, so the key stays captive in the cylinder until the lock is closed and locked again. That is deliberate on fleet and gate applications, it means nobody walks off with the key and leaves the lock hanging open. If your crew needs to pull the key with the lock open, you want a non-key-retaining padlock instead, such as the Sargent 858 or the Sargent 82-856.
7) Will the ABUS Diskus 26/80 hold up outdoors on a gate or truck year round?
The body is heavy stainless steel, two halves hand-welded together with ABUS deep-welding so they cannot be split apart, and the shackle is hardened special alloy steel. It is built for exactly the outdoor jobs listed for it: trucks, vans, cellar doors and factory gates. Made in Germany. If your spec calls for a solid stainless body in a conventional shape rather than a disc, the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock is the stainless alternative we carry.
8) What hasp should I use with the ABUS 26 Diskus padlock?
ABUS pairs the Diskus 26 with the ABUS Diskus Hasp 140. With that hasp the shackle is shrouded to the point that it is virtually impossible to attack, which is the combination to spec if the opening is exposed. On a generic hasp the lock still works, but you lose part of the benefit you are paying for, so check that the staple is thin enough to pass the 45/64 inch vertical clearance.
9) Does the Medeco 5260 substitute for the ABUS 26/80 since both use a 7/16 inch shackle?
The shackle diameter matches - the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter, M3 key technology and a satin chrome finish, and the ABUS 26/80 Diskus also uses a 7/16 inch shackle. The bodies are not interchangeable in use: the 5260 is a brass body in the conventional rectangular padlock form, while the 26/80 is the round stainless Diskus body 3-5/32 inches wide with the shackle shrouded on all sides, with 63/64 inch horizontal and 45/64 inch vertical shackle clearance. If your hasp is cut for a Diskus, such as the ABUS Diskus Hasp 140, a 5260 will not seat the same way.
10) Is the cylinder on the Diskus 26/80 drill resistant?
The cylinder is protected against both drilling and being pulled out, and the body carries additional anti-saw protection with a solid inner base behind the mechanism. So the three common quick attacks on a padlock, drill the plug, yank the cylinder, saw the shackle, are all addressed on this one.
11) Is the ABUS 26/80 a commercial grade padlock or a consumer lock?
It is classed commercial. ABUS positions the Diskus 26 for securing goods of higher value or at high theft risk, which is why it shows up on fleet vehicles, factory gates and storage.
