ABUS 55MB/30 C-KA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the ABUS 55MB/30 padlock fit through my hasp staple?
The shackle on the 55MB/30 is 13/64 inch in diameter, so it needs a staple or hole at least that size. The opening you get for the hasp is 19/32 inch horizontal clearance by 33/64 inch vertical clearance between the shackle legs. Measure the thickness of the hasp loop and the width of the material it has to pass over against those two numbers before ordering.
2) What is the difference between keyed alike and keyed different on the ABUS 55 brass padlock?
The 55MB/30 is ordered one of two ways. Keyed alike means every lock in the group opens with the same key, which is what a property manager wants when one maintenance tech carries one key for every gate, cabinet and meter box on a site. Keyed different gives each padlock its own unique key, which is what you want for tenant storage lockers or anywhere one person should not be able to open someone else's lock. Pick before you order, because it is set at the factory.
3) Can I get an ABUS 55MB/30 on my facility's existing key system?
No. The 55MB/30 comes keyed alike or keyed different on ABUS keying only, so it will not join a Sargent or Medeco master key system. If you need padlocks on the same system as your door hardware, look at a small format interchangeable core padlock such as the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock, which takes the core from your existing system, or the Sargent 758 key retaining padlock in the 758 Series.
4) What is a comparable brass-body padlock to the ABUS 55MB/30 from a US lock manufacturer?
The closest brass-body alternatives are the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock and the Medeco 5260, a 52 Series brass body padlock in satin chrome. Both use a 5/16 inch shackle on the Schlage and 7/16 inch on the Medeco 5260, while the ABUS 55MB/30 uses a 13/64 inch shackle with a 1-9/64 inch body width. If the hasp or cable eye on your opening was sized around the slimmer 13/64 inch ABUS shackle, the heavier shackles on the Schlage and Medeco may not pass through it.
5) I need a padlock that will not lock unless the key is removed - is the ABUS 55MB/30 the right choice?
No. The ABUS 55MB/30 is self-locking: it closes without the key by pushing the shackle down. For a key-retaining lock, which holds the key captive until the shackle is closed so a locker or cabinet is never left open with the key in hand, look at the Sargent 758, a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass. The Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 KESO Series are both non-key-retaining, so they behave more like the ABUS in that respect.
6) We key our whole facility on an interchangeable core system - can the ABUS 55MB/30 be cored into it?
The 55MB/30 uses a fixed precision pin tumbler cylinder and is ordered keyed alike or keyed different, so it is not a removable core lock. For a padlock that takes your facility core, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock is supplied less pop-out cylinder so you can fit your own. Those are the ones to standardize on if the padlocks need to follow the same master key system as the doors.
7) Is a brass padlock a good choice for outdoor gates and exterior cabinets?
Brass is the usual pick for wet locations because it doesn't rust. On the 55MB/30 the body is solid brass and the internal parts are non-corrosive materials, with the hardened steel shackle handling the cut resistance. That combination is what makes it workable on gates, sheds, basement windows, switchgear and barriers that sit outside year round. It is rated as basic protection, so for a high-theft exposure you want a heavier shrouded body, not a 1-9/64 inch brass case.
8) Is the ABUS 55MB/30 key retaining?
It is self-locking, meaning the shackle latches by pressing it down without the key in the lock, so the key is not held captive while the lock is open. If your procedure requires the key to stay trapped until the lock is closed, which is common on utility and switchgear accounts, specify a key retaining lock instead, such as the Sargent 758 in US4 satin brass.
9) How big is the ABUS 55MB/30 body, and is it small enough for a locker or toolbox?
The body measures 1-9/64 inch wide, which is a compact size aimed at lockers, cabinets, toolboxes and loop cables rather than heavy gate duty. If you are locking a standard locker hasp or a small cam latch, that width clears easily. For a wide commercial hasp with a large staple, check the 19/32 inch horizontal shackle clearance first.
10) I need an audit trail on a padlocked outdoor enclosure - does the ABUS 55MB/30 do that?
The 55MB/30 is a mechanical keyed padlock with a pin tumbler cylinder, so it gives no electronic access record. For a padlock on an electronic credential system, the Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and cylinder included. Use the ABUS where mechanical basic protection is all the site needs and the Medeco XT where the enclosure has to be logged.
11) For an exposed outdoor gate on the coast, is the brass ABUS 55MB/30 the right body material or should I use stainless?
The 55MB/30 has a solid brass body with a hardened steel shackle and non-corrosive internal parts, which is why it is used on gates, sheds, cellar windows and barriers. If you want a stainless body instead of brass, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body. The Sargent 858 and Sargent 60-858-2 split the difference with a stainless steel shackle on a non-stainless body.
12) My hasp staple needs about a half inch of vertical shackle clearance - will the ABUS 55MB/30 fit, or do I need a taller shackle?
The 55MB/30 gives 33/64 inch vertical shackle clearance and 19/32 inch horizontal clearance with a 13/64 inch shackle, so it suits a tight hasp or a cable eye. If the staple is thicker or you need to pass the shackle around a chain link, a taller shackle is the answer: the Sargent 60-858-2 carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Medeco 5260 uses a 7/16 inch diameter shackle.
13) Is the Sargent 82-856 a drop-in replacement for the ABUS 55MB/30 since both have brass bodies?
They are not interchangeable on the same hasp. The Sargent 82-856 is a KESO Series non-key-retaining padlock with a 2 by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle, while the ABUS 55MB/30 has a 1-9/64 inch body width and a 13/64 inch shackle. The Sargent is a substantially larger case on a heavier shackle and runs on the KESO key system, so it is a different keying program as well as a different footprint.
14) We want all the padlocks across our storage cages opening on one key - which options support that?
The ABUS 55MB/30 is offered keyed alike so a single key runs a group of cages, and keyed different if each cage needs its own key. If the padlocks instead need to sit inside an existing facility key system, the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock and the Medeco 521 G8R, which ships less pop-out cylinder, both accept a cylinder from that system rather than a factory keying group.
15) What kind of cylinder is in the ABUS 55 brass padlock, and how pick resistant is it?
Inside is a precision pin tumbler cylinder with mushroom counter pins. Mushroom pins are the anti-pick feature here: they catch at the shear line and make raking harder than a plain pin stack. This is basic protection level security, appropriate for deterrence on cabinets, sheds and interior doors, not for a high-value exterior application.
16) Is the ABUS 55MB/30 padlock suitable for commercial use?
It is classified for commercial door hardware use, and the intended applications run to gates, switchgear, barriers, lockers and cellar windows. Security level is basic protection, so the right commercial fit is volume applications where you need a corrosion resistant lock on a lot of openings, not a single high-value point of entry.
17) Will the ABUS 55MB/30 work on a Cobra loop cable?
Yes, loop cable security is one of the stated uses for the 55 brass padlock. Check the cable's end loop against the shackle opening, 19/32 inch horizontal by 33/64 inch vertical, since a thick cable eye can be tighter than the 13/64 inch shackle diameter suggests.
