ABUS 55MB/40-KA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between keyed alike and keyed different on the ABUS 55 brass padlock?
Two keying options are sold on the 55MB/40: KA (keyed alike), where every lock in the group opens with the same key, and KD (keyed different), where each lock has its own key. For a property manager putting locks on twenty storage cages or gates that the same crew has to open, keyed alike is the one that saves the keyring. Keyed different is what you want when separate tenants or departments each need to control their own opening. Both use the same precision pin tumbler cylinder inside the same solid brass body.
2) Can I get the ABUS 55MB/40 on a restricted or interchangeable core keyway for my facility keying system?
No. The 55MB/40 runs a standard ABUS precision pin tumbler cylinder with mushroom counter pins, ordered keyed alike or keyed different, and it is not a removable core lock. If your facility keys padlocks into an existing SFIC or high security system, look at the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock, or a Medeco 52 Series brass body padlock with M3 key technology. Buy the 55 when you want a straightforward standalone lock, not when it has to join a master key schedule.
3) I need a brass padlock with a thicker shackle than 1/4 inch. What are my options?
The 55MB/40 tops out at a 1/4 inch shackle, which is fine for cabinets, lockers, and light gate duty but thin for anything a bolt cutter might visit. For a heavier brass body lock, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock uses a 5/16 inch shackle, and the Medeco 5260 brass body padlock goes to 7/16 inch. Sargent's 758 and 858 padlocks use stainless steel shackles with a satin brass US4 finish if you want stainless rather than hardened steel.
4) What is the closest brass-body padlock to the ABUS 55MB/40 from another brand?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is the nearest brass-body equivalent. Both are keyed brass padlocks; the Schlage KS23D/KS23F carries a 5/16 inch shackle diameter against the 1/4 inch shackle on the 55MB/40, so the Schlage needs a slightly larger hasp or staple opening. The 55MB/40 has a 1-1/2 inch body width with 53/64 inch horizontal and 55/64 inch vertical shackle clearance, which is the dimension set to check against your hasp before swapping.
5) I need a padlock on a facility masterkey system instead of the ABUS 55MB/40 - what should I use?
The 55MB/40 uses its own precision pin tumbler cylinder and is ordered keyed alike or keyed different, which does not tie into a house masterkey system. For that, look at the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock, which takes an interchangeable core so it can be pinned into an existing Sargent system, or the Sargent 82-856 non-key retaining padlock on the KESO platform with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle.
6) Is a brass padlock like the ABUS 55MB/40 OK to leave outside year round?
Brass body, hardened steel shackle, and internal parts made from non-corrosive materials, so the 55 is built to sit outdoors on a gate, shed, or basement window without seizing up the way a plain steel lock does. ABUS calls it basic protection, which is the right expectation: it is a weather-tolerant general purpose lock, not a high security or attack rated padlock. For exposed marine or wash-down duty where you want stainless throughout, the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock has a solid stainless steel body.
7) Does the ABUS 55 padlock lock without the key, or do I have to turn the key to secure it?
It is self-locking. Push the shackle down and it latches without the key, so a maintenance tech can close out a gate or a tool box one-handed with the keys already back in a pocket. The key is only needed to open it. Worth knowing if you are standardizing on a lock that gets opened and closed a dozen times a day.
8) How wide is the 55MB/40 padlock body, and is 40mm big enough for a gate?
The body measures 1-1/2 inches wide. The 40 in the model number is the body width in millimeters, which is a mid-size padlock: big enough for gates, sheds, cabinets, lockers, tool boxes, switchgear, and barriers, and small enough not to foul a tight hasp. The 55 is made in several sizes, so if 1-1/2 inches is too large or too small for the hasp you are fitting, a different body width in the same family is the fix rather than a different lock.
9) For a wet or coastal exterior opening, is the ABUS 55MB/40 the right choice or is there something more weather-oriented?
The 55MB/40 is built for outdoor basic protection, with a solid brass body, hardened steel shackle and non-corrosive internal parts. If you want a purpose-built weather design, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, and the Medeco 54515G XT is an indoor/outdoor padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle. Both of those run larger shackle stock than the 1/4 inch shackle on the 55MB/40.
10) Which padlock has a heavier shackle than the ABUS 55MB/40 if I want more cut resistance on the same brass body style?
The Medeco 5260, a 52 Series brass body padlock in satin chrome, uses a 7/16 inch shackle diameter against the 1/4 inch shackle on the ABUS 55MB/40. That is the biggest step up in shackle stock among brass-body options, and it will require a hasp opening well beyond the 53/64 inch horizontal clearance the 55MB/40 works within.
11) Does the ABUS 55MB/40 hold the key while unlocked, and what do I order if I need key retaining?
The 55MB/40 is self-locking - it closes without the key by pushing the shackle down. If your procedure requires the key to stay captive until the lock is closed, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass. Its counterpart, the Sargent 858, is non-key retaining with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass finish.
12) Can I use the Medeco 54515G in place of the ABUS 55MB/40 on a gate or locker?
They are not interchangeable in the way the name suggests. The ABUS 55MB/40 is a mechanical brass padlock with a pin tumbler cylinder, keyed alike or keyed different. The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle - it belongs to a credential-based access system rather than a plain keyed setup, so specify it only if you are running that system.
13) Is the ABUS 55 brass padlock rated for commercial use or is it a residential lock?
It is catalogued for commercial duty and gets specified across MRO work: switchgear enclosures, barriers, tool cribs, lockers, and cellar windows. ABUS positions the 55 at the basic protection level, so treat it as a general purpose commercial padlock for deterrence and access control rather than a high security lock for a high-value asset. Where the risk is higher, step up to an electronic or high security padlock such as the Medeco XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock.
14) Can I use the ABUS 55MB/40 to lock a security cable?
Yes, it is made for it. ABUS lists the 55 for securing loop cables, including their own Cobra loop cables, along with doors, gates, and cabinets. The 1/4 inch shackle and 53/64 inch horizontal clearance set the limit: the cable loop end has to pass through that opening, so check the loop eye against those numbers if you are pairing it with a cable you already own.
