The lock body is made of solid brass, the hardened shackle has a Nano Protect™ coating, which makes the lock very durable. It locks automatically when the shackle is pressed. Then the precision pin cylinder can only be opened with a key. The "Service" version of the 85 is a plus: For example, you can have our dealers customize the lock of your front door and shed and use the same key for both.

ABUS 85/40-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I get ABUS 85/40 padlocks all keyed alike so one key opens every lock?
Yes. The 85/40 is sold in four keyed alike groups (0367, 0461, 0643 and 0648), so every lock ordered against the same group number opens with the same key. If you need each lock on its own key instead, order keyed different. ABUS also supports keying the 85 alike to keys and locks you already own through the trade Service version.
2) Is there a master keyed version of the ABUS 85/40 for a maintenance crew?
Two master key systems are offered on the 85/40, 0402 and 0403. Each lock in a system takes its own change key while your master opens all of them, which is the arrangement most property managers and MRO crews want across gates, storage rooms and equipment cabinets. Pick one system number and stay on it as you add locks, since 0402 and 0403 are separate systems and one master will not cross into the other.
3) Is the ABUS 85/40 enough lock for a jobsite gate, or do I need a bigger one?
ABUS positions the 85/20 through 85/40 sizes for goods of medium value or average theft risk, which covers lockers, tool boxes, cabinets, cellar windows and interior doors. For higher value contents or a genuinely high theft risk opening, step up to the 85/50 through 85/70 sizes. The larger bodies in the family are also double bolted from 1-3/16 inch body width up, meaning the shackle is locked on both legs.
4) What is the difference between the ABUS 85/40 and a Schlage or Sargent brass padlock?
The 85/40 is a fixed ABUS cylinder lock with a 6,5 mm shackle, keyed alike, keyed different or master keyed from ABUS systems. If you need a heavier shackle, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock uses a 5/16 inch shackle and the Medeco 5260 brass body padlock uses 7/16 inch. If you run a facility on an existing interchangeable core system, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle, so it takes the same cores as the rest of your building rather than a separate ABUS key.
5) Can the ABUS 85/40 be keyed to match a padlock system already in my building?
Not to another brand's system. The 85/40 keys into ABUS systems only, either one of the offered keyed alike groups or master key system 0402 or 0403. ABUS does offer the 85 Service version, which dealers can key alike to ABUS keys and locks you already hold, so the same key can run your front door lock and your shed. If your facility is standardized on a Sargent or Medeco system instead, look at a padlock that accepts those cores, such as the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock.
6) What padlock should be used instead of the ABUS 85/40 on a facility that runs small format interchangeable cores?
The ABUS 85/40 uses a precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins built into the lock, so its keying is set by the lock itself. When a facility keys everything to a removable core system, the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock is the substitute to specify, since its cylinder is a core that pulls and swaps with the rest of the system. It carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. Choose the ABUS where the padlock is keyed on its own or keyed alike to an existing ABUS key, and the Sargent where the padlock has to join a core rotation.
7) Is a brass padlock like the ABUS 85/40 the right choice for a coastal or wash-down location?
The ABUS 85/40 has a solid brass lock body and a hardened steel shackle with NANO PROTECT plating for corrosion resistance, and ABUS points the 85IB variant at coastal and port areas specifically. Where an all stainless body is wanted instead of brass, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder. That is a different build rather than a better one: the ABUS ships as a complete keyed lock, the G8R needs its cylinder specified.
8) Is the ABUS 85/40 brass padlock ok to leave outdoors year round?
The body is solid brass and the hardened steel shackle carries a NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance, with internal components made from rust-free materials. That combination holds up outdoors on sheds, gates and cellar windows. For coastal and port environments ABUS points to the 85IB instead of the standard 85.
9) Does the ABUS 85/40 lock shut without the key, or do I have to turn the key every time?
It locks automatically. Push the shackle down and it latches, no key needed to secure it. The key is only required to open it, which is what you want on a locker or storage cage that gets closed dozens of times a day. Inside is a precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins and a paracentric keyway, both aimed at resisting picking and manipulation.
10) What is the difference between a key retaining and a non-key retaining padlock when replacing an ABUS 85/40?
The ABUS 85/40 locks automatically when the shackle is pressed down, so it can be closed without the key in hand. Among the Sargent padlocks, the 758 is key retaining with a US4 satin brass finish, meaning the key cannot be withdrawn while the lock is open, and the 858 is non-key retaining with a stainless steel shackle and the same US4 satin brass finish. Key retaining keeps a technician from walking off with an open lock; non-key retaining lets one key close a row of locks and move on, which is the behavior closest to how the 85/40 is used.
11) Can a Medeco 54515G XT be used in place of an ABUS 85/40 padlock?
It fits the same hasp job but it is not the same kind of lock. The ABUS 85/40 is a mechanical padlock with a precision pin cylinder and a paracentric keyway, opened by a cut key. The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, supplied with cylinder. The XT belongs on openings where an audited electronic credential is wanted; where the requirement is a keyed padlock that can be keyed alike to existing keys, the 85/40 is the one that answers it.
12) What brass padlock covers a larger hasp than the ABUS 85/40?
The ABUS 85/40 has a 40 mm body width with 22 mm of horizontal shackle clearance and 22.5 mm of vertical shackle clearance, which sets what the lock will reach around. The Sargent 82-856 in the KESO series is a non-key retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle, so it presents a larger case face on the hasp. Measure the hasp staple and the space around it before moving up, since a wider case needs room to sit square.
13) Does the key come out of the ABUS 85/40 while it is unlocked?
The 85/40 is a standard pin cylinder padlock, not a key retaining design, so the key is free once the lock is open. If your procedure requires the key to stay captive while the lock is off the hasp, so it cannot walk away in a pocket, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock in satin brass. The Sargent 858 and 82-856 are non key retaining like the ABUS.
14) Is the ABUS 85/40 padlock rated for commercial use?
ABUS classes the 85/40 as commercial door hardware, and the intended applications run from lockers, tool boxes and switchboards to gates, cupboards and cellar windows. It is a mechanical key lock throughout.
