Padlock brass 85

Our 85 padlock made from brass is one of our classic locks for a number of use cases.

  • Solid brass lock body
  • Shackle made from hardened steel with NANO PROTECT™ coating
  • Can be made keyed alike to already existing keys/locks by the trade (Version Service)

THE ALL-ROUNDER

The brass padlock 85 is suitable for many different use cases.

Whether bags or suitcases, doors or closets, caskets or lockers, basements or sheds: With padlock 85, you can reliably protect your valuables from theft. The lock body is made of solid brass, the hardened shackle has a Nano Protect™ coating, which makes the lock very durable. It locks automatically when the shackle is pressed. Then the precision pin cylinder can only be opened with a key. The "Service" version of the 85 is a plus: For example, you can have our dealers customize the lock of your front door and shed and use the same key for both.

Technology:

  • Solid lock body made from brass
  • Hardened steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ plating for extreme corrosion resistance
  • Can be made keyed alike to already existing keys/locks by the trade (Version Service)
  • Double bolted (as of 1 3/16)"
  • Automatic locking: Locking without key by pushing down the shackle
  • Paracentric keyway for increased protection against manipulation
  • Inner components made from rust-free high quality materials
  • Precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins

Operation and use:

  • 85/20 – 85/40: To secure valuables/goods of medium value or at an average risk of theft
  • 85/50 – 85/70: To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • 85IB: Ideal for use in coastal and port areas
  • To secure bags, suitcases, jewellery boxes, cash boxes, doors, gates, cupboards, lockers, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchboards, etc.

ABUS 85/40HB63-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I get ABUS 85 padlocks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Keyed alike is orderable directly. The 85/40HB63 comes in four factory keyed-alike groups, 0367, 0461, 0643 and 0648, and every lock ordered under the same number takes the same key. Order keyed different if each lock needs its own key, or master keyed if you want individual keys per lock plus one key that opens the whole set. ABUS dealers can also key the 85 to match keys and locks you already own through the Service version, so a shed lock and a front door can run on one key.
2) Can I put the ABUS 85 padlock on my facility's existing interchangeable core master key system?
No. The 85 is a fixed pin-cylinder lock, master keyed at the factory when you order the MK option, so it runs as its own ABUS keying system rather than accepting a core from your building's system. If you need padlocks that take the same core as your doors, look at removable or interchangeable core padlocks instead, such as the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, or the Medeco 54515G, which ships with a cylinder. For a standalone gate, locker bank or storage program keyed on its own, the ABUS 85 master keyed option handles it.
3) What is the closest brass-body padlock to the ABUS 85/40HB63 if a heavier shackle is needed?
The ABUS 85/40HB63 has a solid brass body with a 1/4 inch diameter hardened steel shackle and a body width of 1-37/64 inches. If the opening calls for a thicker shackle in the same brass-body construction, the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter in a satin chrome finish, and the Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle. All three are brass-bodied; the difference is shackle stock, which drives the size of the hasp or chain link the lock will pass through.
4) Which padlock should be used instead of the ABUS 85/40HB63 on a marine or wash-down exterior application?
The 85/40HB63 pairs a brass body with a hardened steel shackle carrying NANO PROTECT plating for corrosion resistance. Where the environment calls for a fully non-ferrous or stainless exterior lock, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less the pop-out cylinder. The Sargent 858 and Sargent 82-856 also use stainless steel shackles, the 82-856 on a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case. Choose by which part of the lock sees the salt or spray: body, shackle, or both.
5) The ABUS 85/40HB63 cannot be put on a facility master key system that uses interchangeable cores. What padlock works?
The 85/40HB63 uses a precision pin cylinder with a paracentric keyway and is ordered keyed different, master keyed, or keyed alike to one of several factory key numbers. That cylinder is fixed in the lock. For a facility standardized on interchangeable cores so the padlock can be rekeyed by pulling the core, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. The Medeco 521 G8R ships less the pop-out cylinder, so the cylinder is supplied to match the existing system.
6) What replaces the ABUS 85/40HB63 when access needs to be audited or credentials revoked without rekeying?
The 85/40HB63 is a mechanical padlock: access is controlled entirely by who holds a cut key, and removing a key from circulation means rekeying the lock or changing the keying. Where a property or utility needs credentials issued and revoked electronically, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock supplied with cylinder, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter. It is not a drop-in for the 85/40HB63 mechanically and it brings a programming and credential workflow with it, so it is an approach change rather than a straight swap.
7) Can the ABUS 85/40HB63 be keyed alike to Sargent or Medeco padlocks already on site?
The 85/40HB63 is offered keyed different, master keyed, and keyed alike to factory key numbers 0367, 0461, 0643, and 0648, and the 85 series can be keyed alike to existing ABUS keys and locks through the trade. That keying lives in the ABUS paracentric keyway. Padlocks on other systems - the Sargent 758 and 858, the Sargent 82-856 on the KESO system, and the Medeco 5260 with M3 key technology - are separate keyways and will not key alike to the ABUS. To carry one key across a site, all the padlocks need to be on the same manufacturer's system.
8) Is a brass ABUS 85 padlock the right pick for outdoor gates and exterior sheds?
Yes for normal exterior use. The 85 body is solid brass, which doesn't rust, and the hardened steel shackle carries a NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance, so gates, cellar windows, sheds and switchboards are all in scope. Internal components are rust-free materials as well. One exception worth knowing: for coastal and port environments ABUS points at the 85IB version rather than the standard 85, so salt-air installations should go that route.
9) Does the key come out of the ABUS 85 padlock while the lock is open, or is it key retaining?
The 85 is a non-key-retaining style lock: it locks by pushing the shackle closed, so the key is not held captive while the shackle is open. If your procedure requires the key to stay trapped in the lock until it is relocked, so it can't be pocketed and the padlock left hanging open, that is a key retaining lock and the Sargent 758 in US4 satin brass is the one to specify. The Sargent 858 and 82-856 are non-key-retaining like the ABUS.
10) I need the same padlock across a whole building, mixing keyed alike and master keyed. Can I standardize on the ABUS 85/40?
That's a good fit for the 85/40HB63. Same body, same 1/4 inch shackle and same 1-37/64 inch width across every keying option, so hasps and hardware stay identical building-wide while the keying varies by area. Run keyed alike groups for zones where one key should open everything, keyed different where each tenant or locker needs its own, and master keyed where supervisors carry one key over the lot. ABUS rates the 85 for commercial use, and the 40 size is aimed at medium-value contents such as lockers, cupboards, tool boxes and cellar windows.
11) Does the ABUS 85/40HB63 hold the key while the lock is open, and which comparable padlocks do?
The 85/40HB63 locks automatically when the shackle is pressed down, so it can be closed without the key in hand. Among the comparable padlocks, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, which holds the key captive until the lock is closed and is the usual choice where a lock must never be left hanging open. The Sargent 858 and the Medeco 54515G are non-key retaining. Key retention is a specification to confirm before standardizing a fleet of locks, because it changes how a technician can work.
12) How much shackle opening does the ABUS 85/40HB63 give compared to a padlock ordered by shackle height?
The 85/40HB63 gives 55/64 inch of horizontal shackle clearance and 2-29/64 inches of vertical clearance, which is what determines whether it will pass through a hasp, a gate chain, or a locker staple. The Sargent 60-858-2 is specified with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. Measure the staple or link the lock has to clear and compare against the vertical clearance rather than the overall lock size.
13) Is a satin brass finished padlock the same thing as the brass bodied ABUS 85/40HB63?
No. The 85/40HB63 has a solid brass lock body, which is a material, not a plating. The Sargent 758 and Sargent 858 are specified with a US4 satin brass finish, and the Medeco 5260 is a brass body padlock in satin chrome - a brass body under a chrome finish. A finish code describes the surface appearance; body material describes what the lock is made of, and the two are specified separately.
14) Is a brass padlock body a downside compared to steel or stainless for security?
Brass on the 85 is the body only. The shackle, which is what a thief attacks, is hardened steel with a NANO PROTECT coating, and locks from 1-3/16 inches up in the range are double bolted so the shackle is captured on both legs. Brass gives you a body that won't rust or seize on an exterior gate. Where you want a stainless body instead, typically wash-down, marine or chemical exposure, the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock has a solid stainless steel body.
