Padlock brass 85

Our 85 padlock made from brass is one of our classic locks for a number of use cases.

  • Solid brass lock body
  • Shackle made from hardened steel with NANO PROTECT™ coating
  • Can be made keyed alike to already existing keys/locks by the trade (Version Service)

THE ALL-ROUNDER

The brass padlock 85 is suitable for many different use cases.

Whether bags or suitcases, doors or closets, caskets or lockers, basements or sheds: With padlock 85, you can reliably protect your valuables from theft. The lock body is made of solid brass, the hardened shackle has a Nano Protect™ coating, which makes the lock very durable. It locks automatically when the shackle is pressed. Then the precision pin cylinder can only be opened with a key. The "Service" version of the 85 is a plus: For example, you can have our dealers customize the lock of your front door and shed and use the same key for both.

Technology:

  • Solid lock body made from brass
  • Hardened steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ plating for extreme corrosion resistance
  • Can be made keyed alike to already existing keys/locks by the trade (Version Service)
  • Double bolted (as of 1 3/16)"
  • Automatic locking: Locking without key by pushing down the shackle
  • Paracentric keyway for increased protection against manipulation
  • Inner components made from rust-free high quality materials
  • Precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins

Operation and use:

  • 85/20 – 85/40: To secure valuables/goods of medium value or at an average risk of theft
  • 85/50 – 85/70: To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • 85IB: Ideal for use in coastal and port areas
  • To secure bags, suitcases, jewellery boxes, cash boxes, doors, gates, cupboards, lockers, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchboards, etc.

ABUS 85/30 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size shackle opening does the ABUS 85/30 padlock have, and will it fit through my hasp?
The 85/30 gives you 16mm of horizontal shackle clearance and 16.5mm of vertical clearance, with a 5mm shackle diameter. Measure the staple or chain link you need to pass through: anything thicker than about 16mm in the tight direction won't take this lock. For a padlock this size that clearance is enough for a standard cabinet or locker hasp, a cash box, a tool box, or a light gate hasp, not for a heavy chain.
2) Can I get ABUS 85 padlocks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. The 85 can be keyed alike to keys and locks you already have through the trade, using ABUS's Version Service, so a property manager can run one key across a front door and a shed, or across a run of locker and cabinet locks. As supplied the 85/30 is keyed different, meaning each lock ships with its own unique key, so keying alike is something you arrange rather than something that happens by default.
3) What is the difference between the ABUS 85/30 brass padlock and a Schlage or Medeco brass padlock?
Body material is the same story, brass, but the shackle and the key system are not. The 85/30 runs a 5mm hardened steel shackle on ABUS's own pin cylinder. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock uses a 5/16 inch shackle, and the Medeco 5260 brass body padlock a 7/16 inch shackle with M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish. Heavier shackles need a bigger hasp opening, so check the staple before assuming one drops in for the other. Where the deciding factor is fitting a facility's existing keyway, the Schlage and Medeco locks take their own cylinders; the ABUS route to that is having the 85 keyed alike through the trade.
4) I need a padlock that takes our building's interchangeable core. Will the ABUS 85/30 work?
No, the 85/30 is a fixed-cylinder padlock with its own pin cylinder, so it will not accept a small format or large format core from your existing system. For a facility standardizing on removable cores, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. Use the ABUS 85 where the value is simplicity and a key you can have matched at the dealer, not where the whole site runs on core swaps.
5) What is the closest brass-body padlock to the ABUS 85/30 if the brand does not matter?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is the nearest straight equivalent: it is also a brass padlock, and it carries a 5/16 inch shackle diameter against the 5 mm shackle on the 85/30. Both are brass-body key-operated padlocks for general locking, so the practical difference is shackle stock - the Schlage shackle is the thicker of the two, which matters if the hasp opening was drilled for a heavier shackle. If the hasp or staple was sized for the slimmer 5 mm ABUS shackle, the 85/30 drops in and the Schlage may not.
6) I need a brass padlock with a heavier shackle than 5 mm - what should I order instead?
Step up to the Medeco 5260, a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in satin chrome. That is the heaviest shackle among the brass-body options next to the ABUS 85/30, whose shackle is 5 mm. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F sits between them with a 5/16 inch shackle, also in brass. Check the hasp eye before ordering up - a 7/16 inch shackle needs a correspondingly larger opening than the 85/30 requires.
7) Can I put a padlock on my existing master key system instead of using the ABUS 85/30?
Yes - that is the case for a removable or interchangeable core padlock rather than the 85/30, which is a keyed-different brass padlock that a dealer can rekey to match existing keys through the ABUS Version Service. The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so the core comes out and your existing Sargent core goes in. The Sargent 82-856 in the KESO Series is a non-key-retaining padlock with a 2 by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle for facilities already standardized on KESO. Both keep the padlocks on the same key system as the doors; the 85/30 gets there by being keyed alike at the dealer instead.
8) Does the key come out of the ABUS 85/30 when it is unlocked, and which padlocks hold the key captive?
The ABUS 85/30 locks automatically when the shackle is pressed down, so no key is needed to lock it and the key is not held in the open position. If you need a padlock that keeps the key captive until the lock is closed - the usual requirement for lockout and for gates where a lost key means a re-key - the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock with a US4 satin brass finish. The Sargent 858 is the non-key-retaining counterpart with a stainless steel shackle and the same US4 satin brass finish, and the Sargent 82-856 is also non-key-retaining.
9) I want to track who opened a padlock and when - is the ABUS 85/30 the right choice?
No. The 85/30 is a mechanical padlock with a precision pin cylinder using mushroom pins and a paracentric keyway, opened by a cut key with no record of the opening. For audited access, the Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key-retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and supplied with cylinder. That is the electronic path; the 85/30 covers the mechanical one where no audit trail is required.
10) Is the ABUS 85/30 padlock key retaining?
No. The 85 locks automatically when the shackle is pressed down, so the key comes out whether the lock is open or closed. If your procedure depends on the key being trapped until the lock is shut again, which is common in institutional key control, look at a key-retaining padlock such as the Sargent 758, which is specified as key retaining. The Sargent 858 and the 82-856 are the non-key-retaining versions in that family.
11) Will an ABUS 85/30 hold up on a dock, marina, or other salt air location?
The shackle carries a NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance and the internals are rust-free materials, which covers ordinary outdoor exposure. Salt air is a harder case, and ABUS calls out the 85IB specifically for coastal and port areas rather than the standard 85. Another route for that environment is a stainless body: the Medeco G8R 521 is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body.
12) What padlock holds up better than a brass one on an exposed outdoor gate?
The ABUS 85/30 uses a solid brass body with a hardened steel shackle carrying NANO PROTECT plating for corrosion resistance, which covers sheds, cellar windows and switchboards. For an opening fully exposed to weather, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less the pop-out cylinder. The Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, non-key-retaining, supplied with cylinder. The stainless body of the 521 removes brass from the equation entirely; the 85/30 handles the exposure through its shackle plating instead.
13) The Medeco 521 G8R looks like a drop-in for a brass padlock - is it?
Not as supplied. The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight solid stainless steel body padlock furnished less the pop-out cylinder, so it arrives without the cylinder and needs one specified and installed before it will operate. The ABUS 85/30 is a complete keyed brass padlock supplied with its key and its own pin cylinder. Treat the 521 as a housing you key into an existing Medeco program, not as a like-for-like swap for a keyed-different padlock.
14) How much shackle opening do I get on the ABUS 85/30 compared with a padlock rated by shackle length?
The ABUS 85/30 gives 16 mm of horizontal shackle clearance and 16.5 mm vertical, on a 30 mm body width, which is what determines whether it will pass through a given hasp eye or chain link. Padlocks quoted by shackle length instead of clearance include the Sargent 60-858-2, a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Sargent 82-856 with a 2 by 2 inch brass case. If you are locking a thick hasp or a chain, measure the opening against the 16 mm by 16.5 mm clearance on the 85/30 first - a 30 mm body is a compact lock and the clearance is what runs out, not the body.
15) For a locker or tool box that gets opened several times a day, is the ABUS 85/30 or a Sargent padlock the easier lock to live with?
The ABUS 85/30 locks automatically when the shackle is pressed down, so the user closes it one-handed without pulling the key out - which suits lockers, tool boxes and cupboards where the lock is cycled constantly. The Sargent 758 is key retaining, meaning the key stays in the lock until it is closed, which prevents a padlock being left hanging open but requires the key in hand at every closing. The Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are non-key-retaining, closer to the 85/30 in how they are handled day to day.
16) Is the ABUS 85/30 padlock rated for commercial use?
It is classified for commercial use, and the 30mm double bolted body with a hardened steel shackle is what backs that up on locker banks, switchboards, cabinets, and storage rooms. Where it fits commercially is the medium-value, average-risk end of the range that ABUS assigns to the 85/20 through 85/40 sizes. High-value storage in a commercial building wants a larger body from the 85/50 to 85/70 range.
17) How many keys come with an ABUS 85/30 padlock and can I get more cut later?
The 85/30 ships keyed different with its own key. Because the 85 works with ABUS's Version Service, a dealer can cut additional keys and can key further locks to the same key, so adding a lock to an existing set later is a normal order rather than a rekey of everything. Plan the keying before the locks go out to site; matching after the fact still works, but it is a trip back through the dealer.
18) I need padlocks that match the satin brass finish on the rest of my hardware - which ones are specified in a brass finish?
The Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, and the Sargent 858 is the non-key-retaining version, also US4 satin brass with a stainless steel shackle. The ABUS 85/30 is a solid brass body padlock, so the body is brass itself rather than a plated finish over another metal, and its shackle is hardened steel with NANO PROTECT plating. The Medeco 5260 is a brass body padlock finished in satin chrome, so it reads silver rather than brass on the wall.
