The lock body on the 55 brass lock is made of solid brass. The hardened steel shackle and internal parts made of non-corrosive materials ensure the lock’s durability. Inside is a precision pin cylinder with mushroom counter pins. The exterior is protected from wind and weather. It locks without a key by pressing down the shackle. 1) What is the difference between keyed alike and keyed different on the ABUS 55/40?
Two keying choices. Keyed alike means every lock you order opens on the same key, which is what you want when one maintenance tech has to hit twenty gates or cabinets on a round. Keyed different gives each padlock its own key, so a tenant or a department controls only their own lock. Pick KA for fleets you service yourself, KD for anything issued out to separate users.
2) Can I use the ABUS 55/40 brass padlock outdoors on a gate or shed?
Yes. The body is solid brass, the shackle is hardened steel, and the internal parts are non-corrosive materials, so the 55/40 holds up outside on gates, sheds, basement windows, switchgear and barriers. Brass doesn't rust, which is why this one gets used on exterior openings rather than a plain plated-steel lock.
3) Can I put the ABUS 55/40 on my existing master key system?
No. The 55/40 uses ABUS's own precision pin tumbler cylinder with mushroom counter pins and is supplied keyed alike or keyed different only, so it won't accept your facility cylinder. If you need padlocks on the same system as your doors, go to an interchangeable or removable core padlock instead: the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle, and the Sargent 758 and 858 are key retaining and non-key retaining versions in the same family.
4) Does the ABUS 55/40 lock without the key, or do I have to turn the key to secure it?
It's self-locking. Push the shackle down and it latches without the key, so a tech closing up a tool box or a cabinet doesn't need to fish the key back out. The key is only needed to open it.
5) The ABUS 55/40 locks when you push the shackle down - which comparable padlocks retain the key instead?
The ABUS 55/40 is self-locking: it closes without a key by pushing down the shackle, so the key can be removed with the lock open. If you want the key trapped in the cylinder until the lock is closed - useful where a key left in an open lock walks away - the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock in a US4 satin brass finish. The Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 of the KESO Series are non-key retaining, behaving like the 55/40 in that respect.
6) Is the ABUS 55/40 the right padlock for an exposed outdoor gate, or is there a better option?
The ABUS 55/40 has a solid brass body with internal components of non-corrosive material and a hardened steel shackle, and it is used on gates, sheds, basement windows and barriers. For fully exposed marine or washdown locations the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder, and the Sargent 858 pairs a brass case with a stainless steel shackle. The stainless-bodied options change the cylinder sourcing, so plan the keying with them.
7) We want audit trail and access control on padlocked gates - does the ABUS 55/40 do that?
No. The ABUS 55/40 is a mechanical padlock with a precision pin tumbler cylinder, ordered keyed alike or keyed different. If you need electronic credential control rather than a cut key, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock from the System Series, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and supplied with cylinder. That is a different class of product and requires the associated key and software system, so it is not a drop-in for a mechanical opening.
8) Is the Medeco 5260 a direct substitute for the ABUS 55/40?
They are both brass body padlocks but they are not interchangeable in a keying program. The ABUS 55/40 runs a precision pin tumbler cylinder and is ordered keyed alike or keyed different. The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter using M3 key technology, which is a restricted, patented key system keyed to that platform. The 5260 also carries a noticeably heavier shackle, so verify the hasp opening as well as the key system before substituting.
9) Which padlocks match a satin brass finish package if we are standardizing hardware on a building?
The ABUS 55/40 body is solid brass, so it reads as brass in the opening without a plated finish. Among the comparables the Sargent 758 and the Sargent 858 are both specified in a US4 satin brass finish, the Sargent 82-856 uses a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case, and the Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock. The Medeco 5260 has a brass body but is finished in satin chrome, so it will not match a brass package visually.
