Padlock brass 83 Eighty Three

Our service lock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

THE SERVICE PADLOCK

Our padlock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

Do you want to reliably secure objects of high value at a high risk of theft? Our service lock 83/50 could be a good solution for you. It is suitable for securing grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchgears, or barriers and can be combined keyed alike with our profile cylinders C83, EC550, EC660, XP20S, for example. The chrome plated lock body is made of solid brass, and the hardened special steel shackle has Nano Protect™ coating for very high corrosion protection. Inside, a special cylinder is at work. You can decide for yourself whether the lock should close automatically or lock with a key. The variant with Closed Shackle (CS), i.e. a raised lock body, means additional protection for the steel shackle, which makes it much more difficult to break open the lock, such as with bolt cutters.

Technology:

  • Chrome plated solid brass lock body
  • Special alloy steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ coating for extra corrosion resistance
  • High precision pin tumbler cylinder with patented pinning window
  • Patented ”Z-Bar“ for 2-in-1 function: converts key-retaining to non-key-retaining and vice versa within seconds
  • Cylinder can be taken out and can be re-keyed to match an existing key
  • RK: Can be keyed into many popular security keyways
  • Easy shackle change: shackle can be exchanged within seconds

Operation and use:

  • To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • To secure gratings, doors, gates, cupboards, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchboards, barriers, etc.

ABUS 83/40-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the ABUS 83/40 padlock fit through my hasp or chain?
Shackle diameter on the 83/40 is 1/4 inch, with 29/32 inch horizontal clearance and 1-1/2 inch vertical clearance inside the shackle. The lock body measures 1-37/64 inch wide. If your hasp staple is thicker than 1/4 inch or your shackle opening needs more than 29/32 inch of width, this one won't pass through.
2) Can the ABUS 83/40 be keyed to match the Schlage or Kwikset keys we already carry?
Yes. The 83/40 takes a removable cylinder that can be keyed into popular security keyways, and the keyway is a required choice when ordering: Yale, Kwikset, Schlage, Schlage 6-5, or Without Cylinder if you plan to install your own. The cylinder is a 5-pin pin tumbler and can be pulled and re-keyed later to match an existing key, which is why maintenance shops use this body across a mixed key system.
3) Should I order the ABUS 83/40 keyed alike or keyed different?
Two keying builds are offered. Keyed alike (KA) puts every lock on one key, which is what property managers and MRO crews want when one tech opens dozens of gates, cabinets and switchgear on a single round. Keyed different (KD) gives each lock its own key, better where tenants or separate departments each control their own padlock. You also pick the keyway on the order, so the KA group can be built into the keyway your building already uses.
4) Our facility runs interchangeable cores. Is the ABUS 83/40 the right padlock?
No. The 83/40 uses a 5-pin pin tumbler cylinder that pulls out for re-keying, but it is not a small-format or large-format interchangeable core lock. If your facility standardizes on removable cores so one person can rotate keying across the site, the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle is the fit. Order the 83/40 without a cylinder only if you intend to fit an ABUS profile cylinder to it.
5) What is a close brass-body alternative to the ABUS 83/40 padlock?
The ABUS 83/40 uses a solid brass body with a 1/4 inch shackle diameter. Two brass-body alternatives are the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, and the Medeco 5260 brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in satin chrome. Both use a thicker shackle than the 83/40, so confirm the hasp or shackle opening will accept the larger diameter before substituting.
6) I need a padlock with a stainless steel shackle instead of the ABUS 83/40 - what should I use?
The ABUS 83/40 uses a hardened special steel shackle with NANO PROTECT coating on a chrome plated solid brass body. If the specification calls for stainless steel, the Sargent 858 is a non-key retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in a US4 satin brass finish, and the Sargent 758 is the key retaining version of that series. The Sargent 82-856 pairs a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case with a stainless steel shackle, and the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock uses a solid stainless steel body.
7) The ABUS 83/40 shackle clearance is too small for my hasp - what has a longer shackle?
The ABUS 83/40 gives 1-1/2 inch vertical shackle clearance and 29/32 inch horizontal clearance. For a taller opening, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. Measure the hasp loop and the thickness of the material being locked before choosing.
8) Can I key the ABUS 83/40 into my existing master key system, or do I need a different padlock?
The ABUS 83/40 takes a 5-pin cylinder that can be removed and re-keyed to an existing key, and it is ordered in Yale, Kwikset, Schlage 6-5, or Schlage keyways, or without a cylinder, in keyed alike or keyed different. If your system is built on an interchangeable or removable core, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock and the Medeco 521 G8R is supplied less pop-out cylinder so you can fit your own. The Sargent 82-856 is a KESO series lock and the Medeco 5260 uses M3 key technology, so each of those ties to its own key system rather than a standard pin tumbler keyway.
9) What does the ABUS 83/40 Z-Bar do, and can I make it hold the key while unlocked?
The Z-Bar is the 2-in-1 feature inside the 83 body: it converts the lock from key-retaining to non-key-retaining and back in seconds, without swapping the lock. Key-retaining means the key cannot come out while the shackle is open, which stops a padlock being left hanging unlocked on a gate or a lockout point. Non-key-retaining lets the lock snap shut on its own and the key walk away. You decide which behavior you want on site rather than specifying it at order time.
10) Is a brass ABUS 83/40 padlock going to survive outdoors on a gate?
It is built for it. The body is solid brass with chrome plating, and the shackle is special alloy steel with a NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance, so rain and salt spray on an exterior gate, grille, cellar window or shed are what it is made for. Brass itself does not rust. Note this is the open-shackle body: it leaves 1-1/2 inch of shackle exposed vertically, so in a high bolt-cutter risk location a closed-shackle version of the 83 gives the shackle far more cover.
11) Can the ABUS 83/40 be used as a lockout/tagout padlock?
It is catalogued for lockout duty and the key-retaining setting is what makes it workable: set that way, the key cannot be removed while the shackle is open, so a lock cannot be left dangling on an energized disconnect. If your program requires each worker's lock to be uniquely keyed, order keyed different. Keep in mind the body is metal, not insulated plastic, so on live electrical work check what your safety program allows.
12) If I need a heavier shackle than the ABUS 83/40, what else is there?
The 83/40 uses a 1/4 inch shackle. For a thicker one, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock runs a 5/16 inch shackle, as does the Medeco 54515G XT electronic padlock. The Medeco 5260 brass body padlock steps up to 7/16 inch. If you need a stainless body instead of brass, the Medeco 521 G8R is solid stainless steel, and the Sargent 758 and 858 padlocks use stainless shackles in key-retaining and non-key-retaining versions respectively.
13) Is the Medeco 54515G XT a substitute for the ABUS 83/40?
No. The ABUS 83/40 is a mechanical padlock with a 5-pin pin tumbler cylinder ordered in a standard keyway. The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, so it belongs to an audited electronic access system with its own credentials and programming rather than dropping into a mechanical key system.
14) I need the key to stay captive in the lock while the padlock is open - which padlocks do that?
The ABUS 83/40 has a patented Z-Bar that converts key-retaining to non-key-retaining and back in seconds, so one lock covers both cases. If you prefer a lock built one way, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock, while the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are non-key retaining, as is the Medeco 54515G XT.
15) For an outdoor gate in a wet or coastal location, is the ABUS 83/40 the right padlock?
The ABUS 83/40 is a commercial padlock whose shackle carries a NANO PROTECT coating for very high corrosion protection over a chrome plated solid brass body, which suits exterior gates, grilles, and cellar windows. Where you want an all-stainless weather package, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, and the Medeco 54515G XT is rated for indoor and outdoor use.
16) Can I keep the ABUS 83/40 and just replace a bent or cut shackle?
Yes. The 83 body is built for easy shackle change, so the shackle swaps out in seconds rather than the whole lock being scrapped. That matters on a fleet of gates where a snow plow or a forklift takes out a shackle now and then. The replacement needs to be the matching 1/4 inch diameter shackle for the 83/40 body.
17) Is the ABUS 83/40 a commercial grade padlock or a residential one?
Commercial. The 83 service padlock is aimed at securing higher value goods at real theft risk, on grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, switchgear and barriers, with a solid brass chrome plated body and a hardened alloy steel shackle. It is the lock a maintenance or security crew standardizes on, not a shed lock.
