It is suitable for securing grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchgears, or barriers and can be combined keyed alike with our profile cylinders C83, EC550, EC660, XP20S, for example. The chrome plated lock body is made of solid brass, and the hardened special steel shackle has Nano Protect™ coating for very high corrosion protection. Inside, a special cylinder is at work. You can decide for yourself whether the lock should close automatically or lock with a key. The variant with Closed Shackle (CS), i.e. a raised lock body, means additional protection for the steel shackle, which makes it much more difficult to break open the lock, such as with bolt cutters.

ABUS 83/50-KA-100 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the ABUS 83/50 padlock fit through a 3/8 inch hasp or chain link?
The 83/50 has a 3/8 inch diameter shackle, so whatever it goes through needs a hole of at least 3/8 inch clear. Working room around the shackle is 59/64 inch horizontal clearance and 1-3/64 inch vertical clearance, which is the space you have between the shackle legs and under the crossbar. Measure the hasp staple and the gap it has to span before ordering; a 1-3/64 inch vertical opening will not reach over a thick hasp plus a chain link stack.
2) Can the ABUS 83/50 be keyed alike with the Schlage locks already on my building?
That is what the 83/50 is built for. The cylinder is removable and can be re-keyed to match an existing key, and it is offered in Schlage keyways: 100, 200, 300, 306, 400, 410, 800, 1000 and 3000. Order it keyed alike (KA) in the keyway your building already uses and it runs on the same key as the doors. It can also be keyed alike with ABUS profile cylinders C83, EC550, EC660 and XP20S.
3) What is the difference between ordering the 83/50 keyed alike and keyed different?
Keyed alike (KA) means every lock you order in that keyway opens with the same key, which is what a property manager wants when one maintenance tech carries one key for twenty gates. Keyed different (KD) gives each padlock its own key, which is what you want when separate tenants or contractors each control their own opening. The 83/50 offers both across all nine Schlage keyways, so the keying decision and the keyway decision are independent.
4) Can I set the ABUS 83/50 so the key cannot be pulled out while the lock is open?
You can, and you can change your mind later. The 83/50 uses a patented Z-Bar that converts the lock from key retaining to non-key retaining and back in seconds. Key retaining means the key stays captive until the padlock is locked again, so a tech cannot walk off with a gate hanging open. Non-key retaining lets it be pushed shut without the key. Most padlocks make you choose that at the order form; this one does not.
5) I am replacing Schlage KS23 padlocks. Is the ABUS 83/50 a straight swap?
Not on shackle size. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock uses a 5/16 inch shackle; the ABUS 83/50 is 3/8 inch. If your hasps and chains were drilled or sized around 5/16 inch, the thicker ABUS shackle may not pass, so check the hole before you order a run of them. Where the openings do take 3/8 inch, the 83/50 keys into the same Schlage keyways (100 through 3000) so the swap can stay on your existing key.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the ABUS 83/50 brass padlock if I need a rekeyable brass-body padlock from Sargent?

8) The ABUS 83/50 shackle is too thin for my gate. What padlock has a heavier shackle?
The ABUS 83/50 uses a 3/8 inch diameter shackle in special alloy steel with a NANO PROTECT coating. For a heavier shackle in a brass body, the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish. Going the other direction, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock and the Medeco 54515G both use a 5/16 inch shackle. Measure the hasp or chain opening before you decide, since a larger shackle diameter will not pass through a hasp cut for 3/8 inch.
9) We want audit trail and access control on our padlocks. Will the ABUS 83/50 do that?
