ABUS KS-2P-6KS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will my padlock shackle fit through an ABUS KS security chain link?
Link opening decides that, and the KS chains state it. The 6KS link has a 1 1/8 inch inside height and 3/8 inch inside width, 8KS is 1 3/8 by 1/2 inch, 10KS and 12KS are both 1 1/2 by 5/8 inch, and 14KS is 2 by 3/4 inch. The inside width is the number that matters: your shackle diameter has to be under it. A 1/2 inch shackle will not pass a 6KS link, but clears 10KS, 12KS and 14KS.
2) What lengths does the ABUS KS security chain come in?
Three pre-cut lengths, 2 feet, 6 feet and 10 feet, and every one of the five models (6KS, 8KS, 10KS, 12KS, 14KS) is offered in all three. The pre-cut lengths are the ones that come with the fabric sleeve. ABUS also supplies the KS chain in barrels for custom lengths if you need a run that none of the three cover, such as wrapping a long gate or a row of equipment.
3) Does the ABUS KS chain come with a lock, or do I have to buy one separately?
Chain only. The KS Series ships as hardened steel chain with a fabric sleeve on the pre-cut lengths, with no padlock included, so you specify the lock yourself and match its shackle to the link opening. For a 6KS at 3/8 inch inside link width you need a slim shackle; from 10KS up you have 5/8 inch or more to work with and can run a heavier padlock. Size the lock to the chain, not the other way round, otherwise the padlock becomes the weak point in the assembly.
4) Will an ABUS KS chain scratch the paint on the equipment I am locking?
That is what the sleeve is for. The pre-cut KS lengths carry a fabric sleeve over the chain so it does not mark paintwork or chrome on whatever it is wrapped around, which matters when you are securing a machine, a trailer tongue, or anything with a finish you have to hand back undamaged. Bare chain in the custom-cut barrel lengths does not have that covering.
5) Can an ABUS KS security chain be left outdoors on a gate or storage yard?
Yes, the KS chain is rated weather resistant, so an outdoor gate, a yard compound, or plant left on an open site is within what it is built for. It is a commercial-duty chain rather than a residential one, which is the relevant distinction for a property manager or facility buyer standardizing on one chain across multiple sites.
6) What is the difference between the ABUS 10KS and 12KS chain, since both are 3/8 inch?
Same link thickness and the same 1 1/2 inch by 5/8 inch inside link opening, but different cut resistance: the 10KS takes 8 tons of cutting force and the 12KS takes 10 tons. So if you have already sized a padlock or a hasp to the 10KS opening, the 12KS drops into the same hardware and buys you two more tons of resistance. Nothing about the fit changes between them.
7) I need a chain longer than 10 feet to go around a whole compound gate. What are my options in the ABUS KS line?
Beyond the 10 foot pre-cut, ABUS supplies the KS chain in barrels and cuts it to a custom length, so a long run around a gate frame or a bank of equipment is available without splicing two pre-cut lengths together. The custom-cut chain is the same hardened steel square link. The fabric sleeve is a feature of the pre-cut 2, 6 and 10 foot lengths.
8) Why use a square link security chain instead of ordinary hardware store chain?
Ordinary round-link chain is sized for load, not attack. The ABUS KS chain is hardened steel with square-shaped links, and the square profile is what makes it hard to get a bolt cutter jaw seated squarely on a link. That shows up in the stated cutting force figures, from 4 tons on the 6KS to 12 tons on the 14KS. If you are securing something that cannot take a conventional lock, a gate, a generator, a rack of tools, that resistance is the whole point of buying a security chain rather than a proof coil.
9) What do I have to specify when ordering an ABUS KS chain?
Two things: the model, which sets the link thickness and cut resistance (6KS at 1/4 inch, 8KS at 5/16 inch, 10KS and 12KS at 3/8 inch, 14KS at 9/16 inch), and the length, 2, 6 or 10 feet.
