Our V500 universal valve lock always fits because it can be attached to all different kinds of valve handles. How does it work? The clamping area surrounds the handle and has an adjustable height. That means it can fit on ball valves of all shapes and sizes. The valve lock ensures that there is a mounting point for a cable lock. This cable lock connects the valve handle through the mounting point to a fixed counterpoint so that the ball valve is fixed in place and protected against unauthorized access.

1) Will the ABUS V500 valve lockout fit my ball valve handle if it's an odd shape?
The V500 is built to clamp any ball valve handle regardless of shape or size. The clamping area surrounds the handle and its height adjusts, so lever handles, flat bar handles, and oversized handles all get gripped. Contact surfaces are both metallic and rubberized, so it holds on smooth or coated handles too. That is the whole point of the design: one lockout instead of a size-specific device per valve.
2) Does the ABUS V500 ball valve lockout come with a padlock or cable?
No cable lock ships with the V500. The device gives you a mounting point to feed a cable lock through, and you supply that cable separately. Budget for it on the same order, because without the cable there is nothing tying the handle to a fixed counterpoint and the valve isn't actually locked out.
3) How does the V500 valve lockout actually hold a valve in the OFF position?
It clamps onto the handle, then a cable lock run through the mounting point ties that handle back to a fixed counterpoint such as a pipe stand or nearby structure. The handle can't swing, so the valve stays where you left it. That means you need a solid anchor point within cable reach of the valve, which is worth checking before you head out to the equipment.
4) Is the ABUS V500 rated for commercial and industrial maintenance work, or is it a light-duty device?
Commercial-grade, with a large solid metal housing and metal construction throughout. It is made for securing valves during maintenance so they can't be turned back on accidentally, which is the standard lockout/tagout situation in a plant, boiler room, or mechanical room.
5) Can one V500 lockout cover a whole building's worth of different ball valves, or do I need several sizes?
One model covers the range. ABUS builds the V500 in a single version, model V500, with the adjustment range doing the work that separate sizes would otherwise do. For a facility standardizing its lockout kit, that means buying quantity of one part instead of stocking a size assortment per valve type.
6) Will the ABUS V500 work on a gate valve or a butterfly valve, or only ball valves?
It's built for ball valve handles. The clamping area is shaped to surround a handle and hold the valve fixed in place, which is how a quarter-turn ball valve works. A rising-stem gate valve with a round handwheel is a different problem and calls for a gate valve lockout instead, not the V500.
7) How fast can a tech put the ABUS V500 on and off a valve during a shutdown?
Adjustment is by an ergonomically shaped rotary handle, so a tech tightens it onto the handle by hand with no tools. The body carries an embedded "Danger - Locked out" warning, so once it's on, anyone walking up to the valve sees why it's there without a separate tag.
