Accentra RN11-GA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is an Accentra RN11 control key blank actually used for?
A control key is not an operating key. The RN11 is a 6-pin blank cut as the control key for an Accentra cylindrical lock system, which is what a locksmith or facility keyholder uses to manage the master key hierarchy rather than to unlock a door for daily use. It ships uncut, so it has to be cut to your keying schedule before it will do anything. If you want a key that just opens a door, you want an operating key blank in your keyway, not a control blank.
2) Which keyway do I order the Accentra RN11 key blank in?
The keyway has to match the cylinders already in your building, and the RN11 comes in 27 of them: GA, GB, GC, GD, GE, GF, GG, GH, PARA, SA, SB, SC, SD, SE, SF, SG, TA, TB, TC, TD, TE, TF, TG, TH, YA, YB and YD. Pull the keyway stamp off an existing key or cylinder in the system, or off your keying schedule, and order the matching letter. A blank in the wrong keyway will not enter the cylinder no matter how it is cut.
3) Our building is keyed Schlage C - is there a key blank for that instead of the Accentra RN11?
Yes. The Accentra RN11 is cut on Accentra keyways only - GA through GH, PARA, SA through SG, TA through TH, and YA, YB and YD - so it will not enter a Schlage C cylinder. For a Schlage C keyway, the Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC is a key blank made for Schlage C, and Kwikset also offers the 88485-005 blank for Schlage on knobs and deadbolts. Match the blank to the keyway stamped on your existing cylinders, not to the lock brand on the door.
4) What is the difference between an Accentra RN11 control key blank and a Kwikset 81804-001 control key blank?
Both are control key blanks, the key type used to operate the control function of a cylinder rather than to throw the latch. The Accentra RN11 is a 6-pin control key blank with .51 pin tumbler specification, cut for Accentra cylindrical lock systems, and it is ordered by Accentra keyway - GA through GH, PARA, SA through SG, TA through TH, and YA, YB and YD. The Kwikset 81804-001 is Kwikset's control key blank and follows Kwikset's own keying. A control key only works in the system whose keyway and pinning it was made for, so a locksmith servicing Accentra cylinders orders the RN11 in the matching keyway and does not cross to the Kwikset part.
5) Can I use a Kwikset 83559-008 6-pin builder key instead of an Accentra RN11?
No - the two do different jobs even though both are 6-pin. The Kwikset 83559-008 is a large bow builder key, the construction key used while a jobsite is still open before the permanent keying is set. The Accentra RN11 is a control key blank, used to operate the control function on Accentra cylindrical lock cylinders in a master key system. A builder key will not perform a control function, and the RN11 is cut on Accentra keyways rather than Kwikset's. If you need a construction key for the framing phase and a control key for the finished system, those are two separate parts.
6) Do I need a locksmith to cut the Accentra RN11, or can I do it in house?
Cutting is required either way, and it has to be cut to the specific pin configuration and keying schedule of your system. A property manager with no key machine and no copy of the keying schedule should hand this to a locksmith. A shop that already cuts its own keys and holds the bitting for the system can do it on a code machine like any other 6-pin blank.
7) I need to add doors to an existing Accentra master key system. Is the RN11 the blank I order?
Only for the control side of it. The RN11 is the control key blank, used to build and manage the master key hierarchy on Accentra cylindrical cylinders. Operating keys, sub-masters and grand masters for those same doors are cut on operating blanks in the same keyway, not on this one. Order the RN11 in your system keyway when you need a control key, and order operating blanks separately for the tenants and staff.
8) I just need spare user keys for our knobs and deadbolts, not a control key - what should I order?
A control key blank is the wrong part for routine spares. The Accentra RN11 is specifically a control key blank for the control function in master key systems on Accentra cylindrical locks. For ordinary operating keys on knobs and deadbolts, the Kwikset 87615-001 is a 6-pin blank for knobs and deadbolts, and the Kwikset 88485-005 covers knobs and deadbolts on the Schlage keyway. Order the operating blank that matches your cylinder keyway and keep control keys restricted to the person managing the system.
9) Does an Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC key blank work in Accentra cylinders?
No. The Emtek MS4-KEYBLKC is cut for the Schlage C keyway, and a Schlage C blade will not enter an Accentra keyway. The Accentra RN11 comes in the Accentra G, PARA, S, T and Y keyway families, so a facility standardized on Accentra cylindrical locks orders the RN11 in the keyway its cylinders were pinned for. Blanks are not interchangeable across keyways regardless of pin count.
10) Is the RN11 key blank rated for commercial use or is it a residential part?
Commercial. The RN11 is catalogued for commercial cylindrical lock applications, the kind of high-turnover openings you find in offices, schools, hospitals, retail, warehouses, multi-tenant residential and municipal buildings. It is not intended for residential-grade hardware.
11) How many RN11 blanks should I order for a building rekey?
Control keys are a small count by design. One per keying system, plus a spare held off site, covers most single-building jobs, because a control key that circulates widely defeats the restricted access it exists to protect. The RN11 comes in 27 keyways, so a campus running several separate Accentra systems needs one blank per keyway in use rather than a stack of a single letter.
