Adams Rite 24-0226-120-628 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Adams Rite 24-0226-120 radius faceplate actually do, and which lock does it go on?
It's the cover plate that mounts over the lock case in the door edge on MS1850 series hookbolt deadlocks. The 24-0226-120 is the radius version, cut to sit flush on a door edge machined with a radius rather than a flat or beveled edge. It is not the lock itself and contains no bolt or cylinder, so if the hookbolt or the cylinder is the part that failed, this plate won't fix it.
2) How do I know whether I need the radius faceplate or the flat one for my aluminum door?
Look at the edge of the door stile where the lock sits. Narrow stile aluminum doors come with a flat, radius, or beveled lock edge, and the MS1850 faceplate is made to suit each of those. A radius edge is rounded across the thickness of the stile; if yours is square across, you want the flat plate, and if it's cut at an angle to clear the frame, the beveled one. Holding the old plate up against the new one is the fastest check, since a plate cut for the wrong edge profile won't seat flat and will leave a gap at the stop.
3) I'm rekeying a storefront door with an MS1850 hookbolt lock. What cylinder does it take?
A standard mortise cylinder, 1 inch length and 1-5/32 inch diameter, fitted with the Adams Rite MS cam. Any standard MS cam mortise cylinder works, so you can key it into an existing system as long as the cam is the MS type. A conventional mortise cam will not throw the hookbolt. The faceplate has no bearing on this, it just covers the case.
4) Will an MS1850 hookbolt deadlock work on a wood or hollow metal door?
It is made for narrow stile aluminum doors, the storefront and glass front type where there is only a couple of inches of stile to work with, which is why the backsets are 1-1/8 and 1-1/2 inches. On a wood or hollow metal door with a normal 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset you'd use a standard mortise or tubular deadbolt instead. The hookbolt itself is aimed at sliding and pairs of narrow stile doors, where it pivots out and hooks a keeper rather than shooting a straight bolt.
5) Does the faceplate for an MS1850 deadlock change depending on whether the lock is 1-1/8 or 1-1/2 inch backset?
No. The MS1850 hookbolt deadlock is built in 1-1/8 inch (28.6 mm) and 1-1/2 inch (38.1 mm) backsets, and the backset is a function of the lock case depth into the stile, not the plate that covers it. What the plate has to match is the edge profile of the door, radius in this case. Order the faceplate to your door edge and the lock body to your stile depth.
6) Do I have to order the faceplate handed for a left or right hand storefront door?
Handing isn't a factor. The MS1850 deadlock is field reversible, so one part number covers both hands and the plate goes on either way. What you do have to get right is the door edge profile, radius versus flat versus beveled.
7) Can I standardize on one MS1850 faceplate across all the storefront doors in my building?
Only if the doors share an edge profile. Buildings fitted out at one time usually do, but a mix of door manufacturers or a door replaced later can bring a flat or beveled edge into an otherwise radius-edge set. Walk the openings and check the edge at the lock before you buy a box of one plate. The bolt, cylinder prep, and backset can all be common across the fleet while the plate still differs.
