1) Will the Adams Rite 7401 electric strike work on a narrow stile aluminum door with an Adams Rite deadlatch?
That is exactly the opening the 7401 Ultraline is built for. It works with Adams Rite deadlatches or cylindrical locksets having a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch latch bolt projection, and the faceplate is a compact 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch radius plate that suits narrow stile aluminum framing. If your latch throws more than 5/8 inch, this is the wrong strike.
2) Is the Adams Rite 7401 strike fire rated?
No. The 7401 is not fire rated, so it cannot go in a labeled fire door opening. For a rated opening you would need a fire rated strike such as the Hager 2930 or the Von Duprin 4211, both of which we carry as fire rated Grade 1 units for cylindrical locks.
3) Do I have to order the 7401 as 12 volt or 24 volt, and fail safe or fail secure?
Neither is an order decision. Voltage is field selectable between 12 and 24 VDC, and fail safe versus fail secure is set in the field as well, so one part covers both. Size your power supply for 0.44A at 12 VDC or 0.23A at 24 VDC. Wiring lands on a quick connect plug-in connector. The one thing you do choose when ordering is finish and whether you want the monitoring switch option.
4) Can I get door position and lock status feedback from the 7401 strike back to my access control panel?
Order the monitored version. The 7401 offers two Form C monitoring switches, one for latchbolt status and one for solenoid status, so your panel sees both whether the door latched and whether the strike actually energized. It is a build option, so specify it up front; the unmonitored version has no switches to add later.
5) I'm replacing an MS deadlock with an electric strike. Does the 7401 cover the old strike prep?
Not with the 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch faceplate on the 7401. The 7400 family model that covers an MS Deadlock strike prep conversion is the 7430/7431 with the 6-7/8 inch faceplate. If your jamb is already cut for an MS deadlock strike, go to that one rather than patching the frame.
6) Will the 7401 strike work with a mortise lock or a rim exit device?
No. The 7401 is set up for cylindrical latches and Adams Rite deadlatches with a 1/2 to 5/8 inch bolt. For a mortise lock, the Securitron MUNL Mortise UnLatch or the Von Duprin 6210 are the fire rated Grade 1 mortise strikes we carry. For a rim exit device, look at the Hager 2945 rim exit strike, which is fire rated with field selectable fail safe/fail secure and a latchbolt monitor.
7) The strike cavity doesn't line up with my door centerline. Is there a fix for the 7401?
Lip extension kits are offered for the 7401 to suit various door centerline-to-jamb dimensions, which is the usual cure when the latch does not sit where the keeper is. The adjustable jaw inserts also take up the remaining gap that causes preload and security complaints.
8) How does the Adams Rite 7401 compare to a Von Duprin 4211 or an HES 310 strike?
Different openings. The 7401 is a narrow stile aluminum strike sized for 1/2 to 5/8 inch latch projection with a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch radius plate, and it is not fire rated. The Von Duprin 4211 is a heavy duty Grade 1 fire rated strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field selectable operation, the choice for a rated hollow metal opening. The HES Folger Adam 310-1(X) body takes 1/2, 5/8 or 3/4 inch throw latchbolts and is fire rated Grade 1, so it covers the deeper throws the 7401 will not.
9) Is the 7401 an exterior gate or perimeter strike?
The 7401 is a commercial interior-frame strike for aluminum stile doors and there is no outdoor rating on it. For a gate or an exposed exterior application, the Camden CX-ED1959 Series is the outdoor rated electric gate strike we stock.
10) If the power fails, does an Adams Rite 7401 leave the door locked or unlocked?
Whichever you set it to. Fail secure keeps the door locked on power loss (that is the mode where the strike holds over 1,500 lbs) and fail safe releases it. The mode is field selectable on the strike itself, so an egress or stair-side requirement can be handled at install without a different part number. Check your local egress code for which mode the opening needs.
11) What finishes does the Adams Rite 7401 Ultraline strike come in?
Three anodized finishes, chosen to match aluminum storefront: 628 clear anodized, 313 dark bronze anodized, and 335 black anodized. Each is available with or without the monitoring switch. If you are standardizing across a building, the 313 and 335 are the ones that disappear into bronze and black storefront framing.
