Adams Rite 8099 M0 3130 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Adams Rite 8099 dummy push bar fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
Yes, on aluminum doors down to a 2 inch stile. The 8099 is a narrow stile device by design. On hollow metal or wood doors the minimum stile width goes up to 3-3/4 inches, so measure the vertical stile before you order. Below 2 inches on aluminum, no narrow stile push bar of this family will land its mounting holes.
2) Does the Adams Rite 8099 push bar actually latch the door, or is it just a push bar?
It's a dummy device. The 8099 is a non-latching, non-keyed push bar with no latch, no bolt and no cylinder. It gives you the touchbar look and single-motion push-to-exit feel on a door that is held by something else, typically a maglock or an electric strike on an access control circuit. If you need the door to latch mechanically on its own, you want a latching rim exit device instead, not the 8099.
3) What do the M0, M1 and M2 options mean when ordering an Adams Rite 8099 dummy push bar?
They set how many monitoring switches are built into the bar. M0 is the plain active dummy push bar with no switches. M1 adds one monitoring switch. M2 adds two. The switches are what tell your access control panel or maglock that someone has pushed the bar, so they drop the mag and log the egress. If the bar is releasing a maglock, you need M1 at minimum, and M2 where you want a second independent signal (one to release, one to monitor). Ordering M0 into a maglock opening leaves you with a bar that does nothing electrically.
4) Can the Adams Rite 8099 dummy push bar be used on a fire rated door?
No. The 8099 dummy push bar is not fire rated, so keep it off any labeled fire door opening. Use a fire rated latching exit device on those. On non-rated egress openings it carries an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 rating, which is the heaviest commercial duty level.
5) Is the Adams Rite 8099 push bar available for wood or hollow metal doors, or aluminum only?
Both. The 8099 is ordered with a Door Type Option of either Aluminum or Wood/Hollow Metal, so pick the one matching your door before you add it to the cart. The stile requirement changes with it: 2 inches minimum on aluminum, 3-3/4 inches on hollow metal and wood.
6) Should I use a dummy push bar or a real rim exit device on my access controlled door?
It depends on what holds the door shut. If a magnetic lock or an electric strike secures the opening and the bar only needs to signal release, a dummy bar like the 8099 is the correct part, and its monitor switch options are there for exactly that. If the door has to stay latched when power drops, or the opening is a labeled fire door, you need a latching rim exit device instead. The 8099 has no latch and is not fire rated, so it cannot secure a door on its own.
7) Do I need to specify handing for an Adams Rite 8099 dummy push bar?
No. Handing is field reversible on the 8099, so one bar covers left and right hand openings. That matters on a pair of doors, where you can stock a single part number instead of two, and on a service call where you don't know the hand until you're standing at the door.
8) What size does the Adams Rite 8099 dummy push bar come in, and will it work on a pair of doors?
The bar is 30 inches, and it's used on single doors and on pairs. On a pair you'd typically run a matching bar on each leaf so both sides look and operate the same. Since the 8099 doesn't latch, nothing is engaging a mullion or the head and threshold, the doors are held by whatever electric hardware is on the opening.
9) What finishes does the Adams Rite 8099 push bar come in to match the rest of my storefront doors?
Seven: 313 dark bronze anodized, 335 black anodized, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 628 clear anodized, 629 bright stainless, and 630 satin stainless. On aluminum storefront, 628 clear anodized and 313 dark bronze are what most existing frames were originally supplied in, so match to the frame rather than to the pull. The touchbar itself is stainless steel.
10) How does the Adams Rite 8099 push bar mount, and what fasteners come with it?
It's a surface applied bar fixed with machine screws, so the door needs tapped holes rather than sheet metal screws into thin skin. Use the manufacturer template to lay out the holes, and check the stile is deep enough for the mounting pattern before drilling: 2 inches minimum on aluminum, 3-3/4 inches on hollow metal and wood. Construction is extruded aluminum with a stainless steel crossbar.
