Blackburn ALS14 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn ALS14 aluminum compression lug take?
The ALS14 accepts 3/0 through 4/0 ACSR and 3/0 through 4/0 stranded conductor. It is a compression lug, so it is crimped onto the conductor rather than tightened with a set screw. Anything outside that 3/0 to 4/0 range needs a different size lug.
2) Will the two-hole pad on this Blackburn lug line up with my existing busbar drilling?
Yes, if the bar is drilled to NEMA pad spacing. The ALS14 is a two-hole lug with NEMA standard mounting holes, which is the drilling used on switchgear, panelboard, and transformer pads. If your bar is on a non-standard or single-hole pattern, it will not bolt up.
3) Can I use an aluminum compression lug on copper conductor?
The ALS14 body is aluminum and it is rated for 3/0 to 4/0 ACSR and stranded aluminum conductor. For copper cable, use a copper or a dual-rated AL9CU compression lug instead, and check the barrel marking before crimping.
4) Do I need a crimp tool for the Blackburn ALS14, or can it be installed with a wrench?
A crimp tool is required. This is a compression connector, so the barrel is die-crimped onto the conductor with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the correct die for the conductor size. The only wrench work is bolting the two-hole pad down. Mechanical set-screw lugs are the alternative if you have no compression tooling on site.
5) What is the difference between a two-hole lug like the ALS14 and a one-hole lug?
Two bolt holes keep the lug from rotating under fault current or vibration, which is why two-hole pads are specified on service equipment, motor terminations, and grounding connections. A one-hole lug can turn on its bolt. The ALS14 is the two-hole version, drilled to NEMA hole spacing, for 3/0 to 4/0 aluminum conductor.
6) Is the ALS14 sold individually or in a pack?
It ships each, one lug per unit, so order one per conductor termination. Model number to specify is Blackburn ALS14.
7) Where is the Blackburn ALS14 lug made, for a Buy America or country-of-origin submittal?
Country of origin on the ALS14 is Mexico. If your project carries a domestic-content requirement, that is the value to put on the submittal.
