Blackburn ALS2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn ALS2 compression lug take?
The ALS2 is rated for #4 ACSR and AWG #4 through #2 solid conductor. It is a one-conductor aluminum compression lug, so the cable has to fall inside that range for the crimp to hold; larger feeders need a bigger barrel.
2) Will a two-hole aluminum lug like the Blackburn ALS2 line up with the bolt pattern on my bus bar?
It is built to NEMA standard mounting hole spacing, so it lands on a bus bar, ground bar or equipment pad drilled to the usual NEMA two-hole pattern without re-drilling. If your pad is on a non-standard pattern, measure center to center before you crimp it on.
3) Do I need a crimp tool for the Blackburn ALS2, or can it be bolted on?
Compression only. The ALS2 is a crimp-on terminal, not a mechanical set-screw lug, so you need the correct die and hydraulic or battery crimper to install it. Contractors who want a field-serviceable connection without a tool should look at a mechanical screw-type lug instead.
4) Can I use the Blackburn ALS2 lug on copper conductors?
The ALS2 barrel is aluminum. Check the marking on the lug itself for an AL9CU dual rating before putting copper in it; the catalog data lists the material as aluminum and the conductor range as #4 ACSR through #2 solid, nothing more.
5) What exactly is a Blackburn ALS2 used for?
It is a two-hole aluminum cable lug: you crimp it onto the conductor end and bolt the flat tongue to a ground bar, bus, motor pad or switchgear terminal. The two holes keep the cable from rotating under load, which is why they are specified for grounding and power terminations rather than single-hole lugs.
6) Is the Blackburn ALS2 sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each. One lug per unit, so order a piece per termination and add spares for miscrimps.
7) Where is the Blackburn ALS2 lug made?
Manufactured in Mexico. That matters on public and institutional jobs where country of origin has to be documented in the submittal.
