1) Can I use an aluminum compression lug like the Blackburn ALS44 on copper conductor?
The ALS44 is an aluminum-bodied compression lug, and the sizes it is listed for are ACSR conductor. If you are terminating copper, pick a copper or dual-rated compression lug in your conductor size instead. Aluminum barrels crimped onto copper are not an equivalent substitution.
2) Will the two-hole pad on the Blackburn ALS44 line up with my existing bus bar drilling?
The ALS44 has a two-hole tongue drilled to NEMA standard mounting hole spacing, so it lands on bus and equipment pads drilled to that same standard. If your bar is drilled to a non-NEMA pattern, check the pad before ordering.
3) Why use a two-hole lug instead of a one-hole lug on a 750 kcmil feeder?
Two holes keep the lug from rotating on the pad under fault current and vibration, which is why a two-hole tongue is the usual call on large feeders and substation work. The ALS44 gives you that on 750 to 800 kcmil aluminum terminations. A one-hole lug is fine on smaller taps where rotation is not a concern.
4) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Blackburn ALS44?
Yes. This is a compression connector, not a mechanical set-screw lug, so it has to be crimped with a hydraulic compression tool and the die matched to the barrel. A wrench-tightened install is not an option on this part.
5) Is the Blackburn ALS44 sold individually or in a bag?
The ALS44 is sold each, one lug per unit, so order one per conductor termination. Remember that a three-phase feeder plus neutral needs four.
