Blackburn WR179 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn WR179 H-tap connector take on the run and the tap?
The WR179 is sized for a 1/0 to 3 ACSR main run with a 1/0 to 2 tap. It is an aluminum H-type compression tap, so it handles both aluminum and, within those ranges, the run/tap combination printed on the body. Two conductors total go into the connector, one run and one tap.
2) Is the WR179 a bolted tap or does it need a compression tool?
Compression only. The WR179 is crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the matching die for an H-type tap body; there are no set screws or bolts. If you want a re-openable connection you need a bolted split-bolt or mechanical tap instead.
3) Will the WR179 tap connector meet utility and co-op specs?
It is RUS accepted and complies with ANSI C119.4, which is the standard that covers connectors for use between aluminum and copper conductors. That is what rural electric co-ops and most utility specs ask for on a tap connector.
4) Can I use the WR179 to tap ACSR overhead conductor?
Yes, the run range is specified for ACSR from 1/0 through 3. It is an aluminum body compression tap, which is what ACSR service taps normally call for. Conductor outside the 1/0-3 ACSR run range needs a different H-tap size.
5) Is the Blackburn WR179 insulated, and does it need taping after crimping?
The connector is bare, with no insulation on it. In any application where the splice has to be insulated, you cover it after crimping with tape or a suitable cover. It is rated for service up to 90 C, so pick a wrap rated for that.
6) How much room do I need in the box or on the pole for this H-tap?
The body is 1-7/8 inches long, so allow for that plus the die jaws of your crimp tool on either side. On overhead work that is a short enough barrel to sit between spacers; in a pedestal or enclosure, measure your working depth before committing.
7) Are Blackburn WR179 connectors sold individually or in bags?
Sold each, one connector per unit, so you can order the exact count for the job rather than a bag quantity. Part number is WR179.
8) What temperature can the WR179 tap connector run at?
Rated for conductor operating temperatures up to 90 C, which covers 90 C rated cable such as THHN/THWN-2 and XHHW-2 as well as typical overhead service taps.
