Blackburn CS85 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn CS85 service entrance splice take?
The CS85 is a two-conductor service entrance compression splice sized for 2/0 on the A side and 2/0 on the B side. It joins one run to the other, so both ends need to be 2/0 conductor. If either side of your splice is a different size, this is the wrong barrel, even though a larger or smaller conductor may look like it starts into the bore.
2) Is the Blackburn CS85 accepted for utility and rural electric service work?
The CS85 is RUS accepted, which is what rural electric cooperatives and many utilities look for on service entrance splices, and it meets ANSI C119.4 when properly installed on the aluminum or aluminum-to-copper combinations it is rated for.
3) Is the CS85 splice insulated, or do I have to cover it after crimping?
Bare. The CS85 carries no insulation material, so it is a bare compression barrel. You supply the cover yourself, typically heat shrink or tape built back to the conductor insulation level, per whatever your utility or inspector requires for the service entrance location.
4) Do I need a crimp tool for the Blackburn CS85, or can it be bolted?
It is a compression connection, not a mechanical set screw type, so it has to be crimped with a die-type compression tool. There are no bolts or screws to torque. If you want a connection you can install with a wrench and re-tension later, you want a bolted or set screw splice instead.
5) Is the Blackburn CS85 sold each or in a box?
Sold as each. One CS85 splice per unit, so order one per conductor joint, not one per service drop. A three-wire service entrance splice needs three of them.
6) Where is the Blackburn CS85 compression splice made?
Country of origin on the CS85 is Mexico. That matters on jobs with domestic sourcing requirements, so check the spec on the drawing before you commit it to a federal or Buy American project.
