Blackburn KL47-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn KL47-1 service entrance splice accept?
The KL47-1 is a two-port splice sized 2/0 on the A side and 2/0 on the B side, so it joins one 2/0 conductor to another 2/0 conductor. It is a two-conductor connector, one run in each end, not a multi-tap block.
2) Can I use this aluminum service entrance splice on copper conductors?
The KL47-1 is an aluminum-bodied service entrance splice. Blackburn rates it to ANSI C119.4, the standard covering connectors for aluminum and copper conductors, so it is suitable for aluminum to aluminum, aluminum to copper, and copper to copper 2/0 runs where that rating applies. Use the appropriate compound and die for the conductor metal you are splicing.
3) Is this a compression splice or a set screw connector?
Compression. The KL47-1 is crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the correct die, not tightened with a set screw. If you need a connector you can install with a hex key and a torque wrench on a service upgrade, a mechanical set screw splice is the type to look for instead; this one requires a crimper on site.
4) Does the KL47-1 splice come insulated, or do I have to tape or shrink it myself?
It ships bare. Insulation material on the KL47-1 is listed as none, so the connector body is uninsulated metal and the installer covers it, typically with heat shrink, a cold shrink sleeve, or tape rated for the circuit voltage. Plan that material into the job if the splice is not going inside an enclosure that provides the required protection.
5) How long is the Blackburn KL47-1 splice barrel, and will it fit in my meter socket or gutter?
Product size is 3-1/2 inches, so allow at least that much straight length plus conductor bend radius and whatever insulating cover you add. In tight meter sockets and shallow wireways that length is the thing that decides the install, so measure the clear run before committing to a compression splice of this size.
6) Is the KL47-1 sold individually or in a bag of connectors?
Selling unit is each, so one splice per order line. For a three-phase service with a neutral you would order one per conductor being spliced, which means four of them for a typical 2/0 four-wire run.
