Blackburn KL65-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn KL65-1 service entrance splice accept?
The KL65-1 is a two-conductor reducing splice: one side takes 4/0 aluminum and the other takes 1 or 2 AWG. It's a straight run-to-run splice, so the larger service conductor lands in the A end and the smaller conductor in the B end. Because the two barrels are different sizes, you can't reverse the ends.
2) Is the Blackburn KL65-1 a compression splice or a set-screw connector?
Compression. The KL65-1 is crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the correct die, not tightened with a hex key. If you need a connection you can make with a wrench and re-tension later, a set-screw or mechanical service entrance connector is the right call instead.
3) Does the KL65-1 aluminum splice come insulated, or do I have to cover it myself?
It ships bare. There is no insulation on the KL65-1, so the finished splice has to be insulated in the field with heat shrink or tape rated for the circuit voltage, or housed in an enclosure. Budget the sleeve into the job when you order.
4) Does the Blackburn KL65-1 meet ANSI C119.4 for underground and service connectors?
Yes. The KL65-1 passes the requirements of ANSI C119.4, the standard covering electric connectors for use between aluminum and copper conductors. That's usually the line item a utility or municipal inspector is looking for on a service entrance splice.
5) Can I use the KL65-1 splice on copper conductors, or aluminum only?
It is an aluminum service entrance splice. The barrel is aluminum, so it's intended for aluminum conductors on the service run. For a copper-to-copper or copper-to-aluminum transition you want a connector specifically listed for those combinations.
6) How long is the Blackburn KL65-1 splice body?
3-1/2 inches. That matters for fit inside a meter socket, pull box, or handhole, and it tells you how much straight conductor you need on each side to make the crimp and still dress the cable.
7) Is the KL65-1 sold individually or in a bag of multiples?
Sold each. One splice per unit, so order one per connection you're making, plus spares if you're crimping in the field where a bad die setting can scrap one.
