1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn KL45-1 service entrance splice take?
The KL45-1 is a two-conductor compression splice with different ports on each end: the A side takes 2/0, the B side takes 1 or 2 AWG. That makes it a reducing splice for aluminum service entrance work, so check which cable goes in which barrel before you crimp. It is sold each.
2) Can I use this Blackburn splice on copper conductors?
It is an aluminum service entrance splice, built for AL cable. For a copper run, or a copper to aluminum transition, use a connector specifically marked AL9CU or CU rather than this one.
3) Do I need a special tool to install the KL45-1, or can I bolt it?
Compression only, there are no set screws. You crimp it with a hydraulic or battery compression tool using the die the barrel is stamped for, and you make the number of crimps the barrel calls for on each side. A mechanical set screw connector is the alternative if you do not have a compression tool on the truck.
4) How long is the Blackburn KL45-1 splice body?
3-1/2 inches. Worth knowing when you are splicing inside a meter socket, trough or pull box, because you need clearance for the barrel plus the crimp tool head around it, and then room for the insulating sleeve over the top.
