Blackburn ICS72-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn ICS72-1 service entrance splice accept?
The ICS72-1 is a two-conductor compression splice with different sizes on each end: side A takes 1 through 2 AWG stranded, side B takes 2 AWG solid. It joins one conductor on each side, so it is a single-run splice, not a multi-tap connector.
2) Can I use the Blackburn ICS72-1 on aluminum to copper connections?
Yes. The ICS72-1 complies with ANSI C119.4 when properly installed on aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper conductors, so a dissimilar-metal splice is within its rating. It is also RUS accepted for utility work.
3) I need to splice 2 AWG stranded to 2 AWG stranded. Is the ICS72-1 the right part?
No. The ICS72-1 pairs 1-2 AWG stranded on one end with 2 AWG solid on the other. A solid-conductor barrel will not seat a stranded conductor correctly, so for stranded on both ends you need a splice rated stranded-to-stranded on both sides.
4) Does the Blackburn ICS72-1 splice come insulated, or do I need to tape it?
It ships with insulation over the barrel, so the splice does not need to be built up with tape to be covered. Crimp it with the correct compression die for the barrel and the insulation stays in place over the joint.
5) How long is the Blackburn ICS72-1 splice, and will it fit inside a meter socket or service head?
The body measures 2-25/32 inches, so it is a short barrel that fits most meter socket gutters and service entrance boxes. Allow room on both ends for the crimp tool jaws before you decide where to place the splice.
6) Is the ICS72-1 a crimp connector or a set screw splice?
Crimp. The ICS72-1 is a compression splice, so it needs a hydraulic or battery compression tool with the matching die, not a hex wrench. If you want a reusable, tool-light connection you want a set screw or mechanical splice instead.
7) Does the Blackburn ICS72-1 sell individually or in a bag?
Each. The ICS72-1 is sold as a single splice, so you order one per connection you need to make. For a typical three-wire service entrance you would need one per conductor being spliced.
