Blackburn LAC42 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn LAC42 compression lug take?
The LAC42 is sized for #4 AWG stranded or #3 AWG solid conductor. It is a one-size compression barrel, so it has to be crimped on the conductor size it is rated for; larger or smaller cable needs a different lug in the LAC series.
2) Can I use the LAC42 lug on copper wire, or is it aluminum only?
The LAC42 is an aluminum-body compression terminal lug. Blackburn's AL-marked compression lugs in this family are intended for aluminum conductor; if your feeder is copper, order a copper compression lug or an AL9CU dual-rated lug in the same #4 range instead.
3) What does the two-slot slotted tang on the LAC42 let me do that a single-hole lug won't?
The slotted tang has two slots rather than fixed round holes, so the pad can slide onto a range of stud spacings and bolt diameters instead of matching one exact hole pattern. That is what makes it useful on panelboard neutral and ground bars, meter sockets, and transformer pads where the existing hole centers aren't yours to choose. A single-hole barrel lug is a cleaner choice only when you know the stud size and spacing up front.
4) I need a set-screw lug instead of a crimp for a #4 feeder. Is the LAC42 the wrong part?
It is the wrong type for you. The LAC42 is a compression lug, so it only lands properly with a hydraulic or battery crimper and the matching die. If you have no crimper on site, use a mechanical set-screw terminal lug in the same #4 range and torque it to the marking on the body instead.
5) Why is this Blackburn lug orange, and does the color mean anything on the job?
Orange is the die/size color code on the lug body. On a compression lug it tells the installer and the inspector which crimp die matches the barrel, so the crimp can be verified after the fact without measuring. The LAC42 is finished bare aluminum with an orange color marking and no insulation on the barrel.
6) Is the LAC42 rated for 600 volt service and 90 degree C conductor?
Yes, 600 V and 90 degrees C. That covers standard THHN/THWN-2 and XHHW-2 building wire terminations in panels, switchgear, and service equipment, provided the rest of the termination is also rated 90 degrees C.
7) Does the LAC42 lug come with a bolt, washer, or insulating boot?
No. It ships as a bare, uninsulated aluminum lug with nothing else in the pack. Mounting hardware for the slotted tang, and any insulating boot or heat shrink you want over the barrel, are separate line items. Plan on the correct compression die for the barrel as well, since this is a crimp lug and not a mechanical set-screw type.
8) Where is the Blackburn LAC42 made? I have a domestic-content requirement on a public job.
Country of origin on the LAC42 is Mexico. If your contract carries a Buy American or domestic-content clause on electrical materials, that origin will not satisfy it and you will need a US-origin lug.
