Alarm Controls 600D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will one Alarm Controls 600D mag lock secure a pair of doors, or do I need two locks?
One 600D assembly covers both leaves of a double door opening. It is a double magnet unit, 600 lbs of holding force per magnet, so each door leaf gets its own magnet and armature and both are controlled together. No center mullion is involved, and you are not buying two single locks and two brackets. If your opening is a single door, this is the wrong part for it.
2) What happens to the 600D magnetic lock when the power goes out?
It unlocks. The 600D is fail safe, meaning the magnets hold only while energized and both doors release the instant power drops. That is what makes it usable on an egress opening, and it is also why it needs to be tied into whatever your fire alarm and access control system does on alarm. Release is instant with no hysteresis, so the doors are free the moment the current is cut rather than holding residual magnetism.
3) Is the Alarm Controls 600D approved for fire rated double doors?
Fire rated and listed. The 600D Series carries UL 10C fire rating and conforms to CAN/ULC-S104 for fire doors, plus UL 294 access control listing, ULC-S527 and UL-864. For an institutional or healthcare facility standardizing on listed hardware, those are the numbers your AHJ will ask for.
4) What is the difference between the 600D and the 600DLB?
Monitoring. The 600D is the standard double magnetic lock. The 600DLB adds an indicating LED, a bond sensor and a door status sensor, with SPDT 3A relay contacts per magnet on the bond sensor. If your access control head end or guard station needs to know the doors are actually secured and magnetically bonded, order the DLB. If the doors are simply locked from a card reader and nobody is watching a status panel, the plain 600D does the job.
5) I only have one door to secure. Is the 600D still the right lock?
No. The 600D is built for a double door opening with a magnet and armature per leaf. For a single door, ZenSupply stocks single magnet units across the same force range: the Dortronics 1107 is a slim 2 inch 600 lb single door mag lock, the Schlage M420 is a 500 lb single door unit, and the Dorma EML310 is a 1500 lb single door lock with a door position sensor. Buying the double and using half of it wastes the second magnet and the header bracket is cut for a pair.
6) I am replacing a Locknetics 390+ magnet. Does the Alarm Controls 600D drop into that prep?
No. The Schlage M390RFK is the model described as a direct retrofit for the Locknetics 390+, at 1500 lbs holding force with door status monitor, magnetic bond sensor and relock time delay. The Alarm Controls 600D is a 600 lb per magnet double door unit that mounts with its own E-Z mount header bracket and template, so it is a fresh install on the header rather than a drop-in to an existing 390+ footprint.
7) Can I run a 600D mag lock on an unheated garage or vestibule door?
The operating range is +14 to +131F (-10 to +55C), so an unheated vestibule, stairwell or parking structure entry in most climates is within spec. Sustained sub-zero exterior conditions are outside it. Non-aluminum parts are plated against corrosion, but for a fully exposed exterior opening a purpose-built weatherproof unit like the Locknetics WMG Series is the one to look at instead.
8) Will the 600D work with the access control system I already have?
Any of them. The 600D takes a switched 12 or 24 VDC feed and holds while energized, so it works downstream of any card reader, keypad, intercom or panel that can break power to the lock. There is no proprietary controller and no data connection. Built-in arc suppression is already in the magnet, so you do not need to add a diode across the coil at the relay.
9) What comes with the 600D mag lock for mounting, and what do I still have to supply?
The kit includes the E-Z mount header bracket and a drilling template, plus self-drilling TEC screws, so the header side is covered without fabricating anything. You supply the power: a 12 or 24 VDC regulated supply sized for both magnets, the wiring from it, and whatever release device or access control relay switches it. Fire alarm interface for the release is a separate line item on the job as well.
10) Can I use the 600DLB bond sensor to drive an alarm panel input?
Yes, and it is a dry contact, so it drops into most panel inputs directly. The 600DLB bond sensor gives SPDT 3A relay contacts per magnet, which means each leaf reports separately and you can wire them in series for a single secure or bring both back for individual door status. The separate door status sensor tells you the leaf is closed; the bond sensor tells you the magnet is actually gripping it. Those are two different failures, which is why a monitored opening wants both.
11) Is a surface mag lock like the 600D the right choice, or should I be looking at a shear lock?
Surface mag locks like the 600D mount on the header with the armature on the door face, which is fast to install and easy to service, but the magnet is visible and it eats stop depth. A shear lock such as the ROFU 8031-002 mortises into the header and door edge, disappears when the door is closed, and holds 2200 lbs, but it needs the door and frame machined and it is unforgiving of a door that sags or hangs out of alignment. For a retrofit onto existing doors where nobody wants to mill the frame, the surface unit is the practical answer.
12) What finishes does the Alarm Controls 600D come in, and can I match the other doors in the building?
Two finishes are orderable: clear anodized US28, which is standard, and DURO Duranodic US40, specified at time of order. Both are offered on the 600D and the 600DLB. If the mag needs to disappear against a dark bronze storefront, US40 is the one. Dress covers in polished chrome and brass are available where the header is a finished architectural surface.
