Alarm Controls 1200S – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an Alarm Controls 1200 Series maglock stay locked if the building loses power?
No. The 1200 Series is a fail-safe magnetic lock, so it releases the moment power drops and the door is free to open. That's the behavior egress codes generally want on a maglock, but it means the opening is unsecured during an outage. If you need the door to stay latched with no power, a magnetic lock is the wrong device family entirely, you want a mechanical lock or a fail-secure electric strike instead.
2) Do I have to order the Alarm Controls 1200 maglock for 12 volts or 24 volts?
Voltage is selected in the field on the 1200 Series, it takes 12 or 24 VDC and you set it at install. Size your supply from the draw: 505 mA at 12 VDC, 260 mA at 24 VDC. On long cable runs 24 VDC is the easier one to hold voltage on because the current is roughly half. Filtered, regulated DC only, this is a continuous-duty magnet.
3) Will the Alarm Controls 1200 work with my existing card reader or keypad system?
Yes, the 1200 Series works with any access control system. It's a dumb magnet, it holds while it has power and releases when the controller cuts it, so the reader, keypad, REX and timing all live in your panel. Release is instant with no hysteresis, which matters on a push-to-exit button where a lingering magnet reads as a stuck door. Arc suppression is built in, so you aren't adding a diode across the coil at the panel.
4) Can I use the Alarm Controls 1200 maglock on a pair of doors?
Not one unit. The 1200 Series is a single door magnetic lock, one magnet and one armature, so a pair needs two of them or a double door unit built for it. Purpose-built doubles in the same 1200 lb class include the DynaLock 2250 Series, surface mounted for outswing or inswing single or double doors, and the Dorma EML320 double door magnet at 1500 lb.
5) What is a direct alternative to the Alarm Controls 1200S if I need a 1200 lb surface mounted mag lock for a single door?
The DynaLock 2011 is a single electromagnetic lock rated at 1200 lb holding force, surface mounted for an outswing door. The DynaLock 2050 Series is also a 1200 lb single electromagnetic lock, surface mounted for outswing or inswing single or double doors, so it covers a wider set of door swings. The Alarm Controls 1200S carries a 1200 lb holding force as well and runs on 12/24VDC.
6) The header on this frame is narrow. What magnetic lock fits where the 1200 Series magnet will not?
The Alarm Controls 1200 Series magnet measures 10-1/2 inch L x 2-7/8 inch H x 1-1/2 inch W. Where that will not sit on the header, the Dortronics 1107 is a narrow 2 inch slim line mag lock for a single door at 600 lb holding force. The Schlage M420 is a single door electromagnetic lock at 500 lb holding force. Both come in below the 1200 lb holding force of the Alarm Controls unit.
7) Is a shear lock the same thing as a 1200 Series magnetic lock?
No. The Alarm Controls 1200 Series is a surface applied magnetic lock with a 10-1/2 inch magnet and a 7-1/4 inch armature, mounted with an E-Z mount header bracket and template. The ROFU 8031-002 is a shear lock at 2200 lb holding force, 12/24VDC, monitored, which is a different mounting approach in the opening. The Schlage 320M is a compact mortise sliding door electromagnetic lock at 1500 lb holding force, a mortised part rather than a surface mount.
8) I am replacing a Locknetics 390+. Does an Alarm Controls 1200 Series drop into that prep?
The Schlage M390RFK is the direct retrofit for the Locknetics 390+, at 1500 lb holding force, heavy duty, with door status monitor, magnetic bond sensor and relock time delay. The Alarm Controls 1200 Series is a 1200 lb magnetic lock mounted with its own E-Z mount header bracket and template, so it is a new install rather than a retrofit of that prep.
9) Is a 1200 lb magnetic lock strong enough for a commercial exterior door?
1200 lb of holding force is the standard commercial rating for a single perimeter or stairwell door, and the 1200 Series is a commercial-duty lock. Step up only where the specification calls for it, the Dorma EML310 and the Schlage M390RFK are 1500 lb single door magnets. Step down for interior office, closet or cabinet doors where 500 lb is plenty, the Schlage M420 covers that. Holding force is not the whole story on a real attack, the frame and the header anchorage have to be as strong as the magnet.
10) Is the Alarm Controls 1200 magnetic lock approved for a fire rated door?
Magnetic locks on fire doors are a specification question, and where the job requires a fire rated electromagnetic lock, the Dorma EML310 Series carries a fire rating and is available for a single door at 1500 lb with a door position sensor, or with bond alert added. Take that to your AHJ with the door assembly's own label before you specify anything on a labeled opening.
11) I need a maglock for an aluminum glass storefront door, is a surface mounted magnet the right choice?
A surface magnet like the 1200 Series is the straightforward choice when there's a header to mount to and you can live with a visible bar above the door. Where the look matters or the header won't take it, a different mounting style is the answer: a shear lock such as the ROFU 8031-002 conceals in the door and frame at 2200 lb, and for a sliding door the Schlage 320M is a compact mortise magnetic lock at 1500 lb. On a narrow stile aluminum door check your header face against the 2-7/8 inch magnet dimension first.
12) If I only need door position monitoring and not bond sensing, what should I look at instead of the 1200LB?
The Dorma EML310 DP is a single door electromagnetic lock rated 1500 lb with a door position sensor only, without the bond alert version's sensing, and it is fire rated and electrically locked (fail safe). The Dortronics 1000 Series industrial magnetic lock carries an SPDT door position switch and runs 12/24VDC dual voltage, field selectable, with sealed electronics and weather resistant construction. On the Alarm Controls side, the 1200L drops the bond and door status sensors and keeps the indicating LED.
