American Lock AME-A11KA 2KEY – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does keyed alike mean on the American Lock A11KA, and how do I get all my locks on one key?
Keyed alike means every A11KA on the order opens with the same key, so one key runs the whole set of locks. You specify the key code at ordering, and because the 5-pin APTC12 cylinder is non-rekeyable, the keying is set at the factory and cannot be changed later in the field. Get the code right on the purchase order; adding locks to an existing set later means ordering to that same code. If you want each lock on its own key instead, the A11 (A11KD) is the keyed different version of the same padlock, and A11KAMK is keyed alike with a master key above it.
2) Will an American Lock A11KA fit through my hasp? What are the shackle dimensions?
The shackle is 5/16 inch diameter with a 2 inch clearance height and 3/4 inch between the legs, on a body 1-3/4 inches wide. That 3/4 inch inside width is the number that decides it: the hasp staple or chain link has to pass through that gap, and the staple thickness plus whatever you are locking has to fit inside the 2 inch height. On a thick padlock eye or a heavy gauge hasp, measure the staple before you order.
3) Can a locksmith rekey an American Lock A11KA if a key goes missing?
No. The A11KA cylinder is non-rekeyable, so a lost or copied key cannot be designed out by repinning it. That is deliberate on a keyed alike fleet lock, it stops anyone in the field from quietly altering the keying, but it means a compromised key code obliges you to replace the locks rather than service them. If your program needs field rekeying, this is the wrong padlock family.
4) I need a padlock our locksmith can key into our existing Sargent system - the A11KA is non-rekeyable. What do I use instead?
The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. A removable core accepts an interchangeable core, so a locksmith can pull the core and set the lock into a facility masterkey system on site, which the A11KA cannot do - its 5-pin APTC12 cylinder is non-rekeyable and is keyed at the factory instead. The 60-858-2 shackle length of 2 inches is the same clearance the A11KA gives, so the two clear the same hasp. Choose the A11KA when factory keying to a fixed key code is what you want, and the 60-858-2 when the lock has to join a core system you already run.
5) The ABUS 74/40 safety padlock looks like an aluminum body padlock - can it replace an American Lock A11KA?
Not for the same job. The ABUS 74/40 is an insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder, a 1/4 inch shackle diameter and a 1-1/2 inch body width. Insulated safety padlocks are built for lockout/tagout on energized equipment, where the lock identifies a worker and is not meant to be keyed alike across a site. The A11KA is a security padlock for self-storage units, lockers and manufacturing environments, with a 5/16 inch shackle and keyed-alike factory keying so one key opens the group. If the requirement is electrical safety lockout, the 74/40 is the correct family; if it is securing property, the A11KA is.
6) What padlock has the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter as the American Lock A11KA but with a brass body instead of aluminum?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass body padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, matching the A11KA shackle diameter while changing the body material from the A11KA solid aluminum to brass. Brass is the common choice where a heavier, traditional padlock body is wanted on gates and cabinets; the A11KA aluminum body is the lighter option and is aimed at corrosive environments such as manufacturing plants and self-storage. Shackle diameter is what usually decides the swap, because it sets what hasp opening and chain link the lock will pass through, and both take the same 5/16 inch.
7) Is an aluminum body padlock strong enough for outdoor and coastal use?
That is exactly what the A11KA is built for. The solid aluminum body does not rust the way a plated steel case does, which is why it gets specified for corrosive environments, wash-down areas and exposed outdoor gates. The strength is in the shackle, not the body: it is hardened boron alloy steel at 5/16 inch diameter, plated for corrosion resistance, so you get cut resistance where an attack actually happens while the body handles the weather. Body color is grey.
8) Can I get the A11KA padlock with a chain attached for gates or lockers?
Yes. The A11KA is orderable either bare or with a #40 sash chain, 9 inches long, zinc plated, which keeps the lock captive at the door or locker so it does not walk off or get set down and lost. The chain option is available with every key count offered, so you can pair it with 1, 2, 3 or 4 keys per lock, or zero.
9) How many keys come with each American Lock A11KA, and can I order locks with no keys?
Key count is a choice on the order, not a fixed number. Standard is 2 keys per lock, and you can also take 1, 3 or 4. Zero keys per lock is also orderable, which is what a self-storage operator or a facility running keyed alike sets wants: the locks arrive keyless and you issue keys from a separate batch cut to the same code, so you are not paying for and tracking hundreds of keys you will never hand out.
10) What is the difference between the American Lock A10, A11 and A12 aluminum padlocks?
They are the same solid aluminum non-rekeyable padlock family, separated by size and shackle. The A11KA carries a 1-3/4 inch wide body with a 5/16 inch diameter, 2 inch tall shackle. The A10 and A12 sit either side of it in the same run, and each of the three is sold in four keying arrangements: keyed different, keyed alike, keyed different master keyed, and keyed alike master keyed. Pick the body size for the hasp, then pick the keying suffix for how the facility is managed.
11) Will an A11KA padlock hold up in a salt air or wash-down environment better than a stainless body lock?
Both routes work, they just fail differently. The A11KA answers corrosion with a solid aluminum body and a plated shackle, and it is the cheaper way to put a large keyed alike group outdoors. Where the exposure is severe and you would rather have a solid stainless case, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body. The Medeco 54515G XT is an indoor/outdoor padlock with the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter as the A11KA, if you want electronic audit and access control on the same hasp.
12) Is there a smaller, lighter aluminum padlock than the American Lock A11KA for lockers and low-security cabinets?
The ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body width and a 3/16 inch shackle diameter. That is a narrower body and a thinner shackle than the A11KA, which runs a 1-3/4 inch wide body and a 5/16 inch shackle. The thinner 3/16 inch shackle passes through smaller hasp openings and locker latches that will not take 5/16 inch, so measure the opening before ordering. The A11KA is the heavier-shackle choice where cut resistance on an exterior or yard application matters.
13) For a coastal or washdown application, what padlock is a step up from the American Lock A11KA aluminum body?
The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder. Stainless is a different corrosion answer than the A11KA solid aluminum body with its zinc plated boron shackle, and the weather-tight construction is aimed at direct exposure. Note that the 521 G8R ships without the pop-out cylinder, so the cylinder has to be specified separately, while the A11KA arrives with its 5-pin APTC12 cylinder already in the lock and factory keyed. That difference decides which one is a drop-in order and which needs a second line item.
14) What is the difference between the Sargent 758 and 858 padlocks when comparing them to an American Lock A11KA?
The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 858 is a non-key retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass finish. Key retaining means the key cannot be withdrawn while the shackle is open, which is how facilities stop a lock being left hanging unlocked on a gate; non-key retaining lets the key come out with the shackle open, which suits crews carrying one key across many locks. That second pattern is the same working style the A11KA is set up for, since it is keyed alike so one key operates the whole group and can be ordered with up to 4 keys per lock.
15) We want audit trail and access control on our padlocks - what replaces a mechanical American Lock A11KA?
The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and cylinder included. It carries the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter as the A11KA, so it fits the same hasps and chain links, but it operates on an electronic credential rather than the A11KA mechanical 5-pin APTC12 cylinder. That is the choice point: the A11KA is a factory keyed mechanical lock with Edge key control, while the 54515G is for sites that need electronic control over who opens which lock and when.
16) What padlock has a thicker shackle than the American Lock A11KA for a high-exposure gate?
The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish. At 7/16 inch its shackle is thicker than the 5/16 inch shackle on the A11KA, which means it needs a hasp and chain sized to accept it - a hasp drilled for 5/16 inch will not take it. The A11KA answer to exposure is a different one: a zinc plated boron alloy steel shackle for cut resistance inside a 5/16 inch diameter, which keeps it compatible with standard 5/16 inch hardware.
17) How are American Lock A11KA padlocks packed for a bulk storage or facility order?
They ship 6 to a shelf pack and 24 to a master carton, which is the useful number when you are keying a storage facility or a locker room and want the whole run on one code. Order in multiples of the carton and you keep the keyed alike group intact instead of splitting codes across partial packs.
18) Is the A11KA key retaining, and does the key stay in when the lock is open?
On a padlock, key retaining means the key cannot be withdrawn while the shackle is open, which stops the lock being left hanging unlocked. If that behavior matters for your application, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass, while the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are non-key retaining with stainless steel shackles. Match that choice to how your staff actually handle the lock at the door.
19) Is there a padlock with a non-metallic outer surface to avoid marring painted doors, instead of the American Lock A11KA?
The ABUS 76/40 is a plastic-covered aluminum core padlock with a 1/4 inch shackle diameter and a 1-37/64 inch width. The plastic cover over an aluminum core keeps the lock body from scuffing painted gates, powder-coated lockers and vehicle bodies. The A11KA takes a different approach with a solid aluminum covered body 1-3/4 inch wide and a 5/16 inch shackle. Where the swap matters is the shackle: at 1/4 inch the 76/40 will not fill a hasp sized for 5/16 inch, so confirm the hasp before substituting.
