American Lock AME-A1307KA BLU 2KEY – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the KA in American Lock A1307KA mean, and will all the locks I order open with the same key?
KA is keyed alike. Every A1307KA padlock ordered against the same key code opens with the same key, which is how facilities standardize a bank of self-storage units, gates, or lockers on one key. There is a Key Code field on the order, so if you already run an American Lock keyed alike code in your building, supply it and the new locks match the keys you carry. If you need every lock on a different key, the A1307 (A1307KD) is the keyed different version; A1307KZ ships zero-bitted and A1307UN uncombinated for locksmiths who pin their own.
2) Will the American Lock A1307 padlock shackle fit through my hasp?
The shackle is 3/8 inch in diameter with a 3/4 inch clearance between the legs and stands 3 inches tall above the body. So the hasp staple has to pass a 3/8 inch bar, and the 3/4 inch gap sets how much material you can capture, chain link, hasp tongue plus staple, or a gate eye. The body itself is 2 inches wide, so on a recessed or shrouded hasp check you have 2 inches of clearance for the lock body to seat.
3) Can a locksmith rekey the American Lock A1307 into an existing master key system?
It takes a rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder, so a locksmith can repin it in the field rather than replacing the lock. If you want it factory master keyed, order the A1307KAMK for keyed alike under a master key, or the A1307MK for keyed different under a master. Straight A1307KA comes keyed alike only, with no master above it.
4) I need a padlock that takes an interchangeable core instead of a rekeyable pin cylinder - what should I order instead of the A1307KA?
The A1307KA is built around a rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder that is pinned in the body, so it does not accept a removable core. For a facility standardized on interchangeable cores, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. That lets your locksmith swap cores on the same keying system used on the doors, rather than repinning each padlock.
5) Which padlock should I use instead of the A1307KA if it will be used on an electrical panel and needs to be non-conductive?
The A1307KA body is solid aluminum, a conductive metal, even with the black anodized finish. Where a non-conductive exterior is required, the ABUS 74/40 is an insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder, 1/4 inch shackle diameter and 1-1/2 inch body width, and the ABUS 76/40 is a plastic-covered aluminum core padlock with a 1/4 inch shackle diameter and 1-37/64 inch width. Both run a smaller shackle than the A1307KA's 3/8 inch.
6) We run a high-security key system - what padlock matches that better than the A1307KA?
The A1307KA uses American Lock's rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder. If the site is standardized on a patented high-security platform, the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in satin chrome, and the Sargent 82-856 is a non-key retaining padlock on the KESO system with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. Both are heavier shackle or brass-case builds than the aluminum-bodied American lock.
7) What is the difference between the American Lock A1305, A1306 and A1307?
All three are the same 2 inch wide solid aluminum rekeyable body; the shackle height is what changes. The A1307 carries the 3 inch tall shackle, the longest of the three, which is what you want for chain-link gates, thick hasps, or anywhere you need to loop through a chain. If the shackle is standing well proud of the hasp and giving bolt cutters a purchase, step down to the A1306 or A1305 in the same family.
8) Can I get these padlocks color coded for different departments or contractors?
Yes. The A1307KA lock body comes in blue, brown, red and yellow anodized aluminum, plus the standard black. Colour coding is how most MRO and safety programs separate departments, contractor crews, or lock-out groups at a glance. The catalog numbers for the coloured bodies read A1307KABLU, A1307KABRN, A1307KARED and A1307KAYLW. Every colour is the same lock mechanically.
9) Will an aluminum padlock hold up outdoors or in a washdown area?
The A1307 body is solid aluminum with a black anodized finish, which is the reason to pick it over brass or plated steel for exposed gates, yard equipment and self-storage doors, aluminum does not rust the way a plated steel body does. The shackle is boron alloy steel for cut resistance, and the locking mechanism uses dual ball bearings to resist pulling and prying. American Lock calls out harsh outdoor conditions and manufacturing environments as intended uses.
10) How many keys come with each American Lock A1307KA padlock?
Standard is 2 keys per lock. You can also order 1, 3 or 4 keys per lock, or 0 keys per lock when you are buying a quantity of locks on one keyed alike code and only need a handful of keys for the whole set. On a keyed alike order that last option is the one that keeps you from paying for keys you will throw in a drawer.
11) Can I order the A1307 padlock with a chain so it stays attached to the gate?
Yes. Each colour and key count can be ordered with a #40 sash chain, 9 inches long, zinc plated, or with no chain at all. The chain keeps the padlock captive on a gate, panel or valve cover so it does not walk off or get set down, which is the usual reason a plant or storage operator specifies it.
12) What else could I use instead of an American Lock A1307 aluminum padlock?
Depends what is driving the choice. For a small-format safety or lockout lock, the ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum body at 1-1/4 inch wide with a 3/16 inch shackle, much lighter duty than the 2 inch, 3/8 inch shackle American. For a brass body instead of aluminum, look at the Sargent 758 key-retaining padlock or the Schlage KS23D/KS23F with a 5/16 inch shackle. If your facility runs interchangeable cores, the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock lets you key it to the same core system as your doors, which the A1307 will not do, it is a rekeyable pin cylinder lock.
13) I need more security than a standard padlock cylinder. Is there a higher-security option?
The A1307 uses a 5-pin APTC12 rekeyable cylinder that resists picking, and American Lock offers Edge key control, keying options, and laser engraving or custom marking on the family for accountability. If you need patented key control with legal key duplication protection, look at a Medeco instead, the 52 Series 5260 brass body padlock with M3 key technology, or the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight stainless steel body. For credentialed electronic audit trail, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock.
14) Is the ABUS 72/30 a substitute for the American Lock A1307KA for lockout tagout?
They are different sizes. The ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body width and a 3/16 inch shackle diameter. The American Lock A1307KA is a 2 inch wide aluminum body with a 3/8 inch shackle, which is a heavier lock than a typical thin-shackle safety padlock. If the requirement is a small, light padlock for personal lockout on a breaker or valve, the 72/30 is the closer match; if the requirement is a solid-body lock for gates, self-storage and outdoor use, the A1307KA is the heavier build.
15) What brass-body padlock can I use where the A1307KA's aluminum body is not accepted?
Two brass alternatives are commonly specified. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 858 is the non-key retaining version with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass. The A1307KA differs in body material, using solid aluminum with a black anodized finish, and in keying approach, since it ships keyed alike on a rekeyable 5-pin cylinder. Choose 758 if the key must stay captive while the lock is open, 858 if the user needs to walk away with the key.
16) We want electronic audit trail on our gate locks - is there an alternative to the A1307KA padlock?
Yes. The Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and supplied with cylinder. It is the choice when you need electronic access control and audit capability on a padlocked opening. The American Lock A1307KA is a purely mechanical lock with a rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder and a 3/8 inch boron shackle, so it gives you a larger shackle section but no access records.
17) Is the Schlage KS23D/KS23F a direct replacement for an American Lock A1307KA?
Not a direct swap. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, while the A1307KA is a 2 inch wide aluminum body with a 3/8 inch shackle diameter and 3 inch shackle length. The smaller Schlage shackle diameter can pass through hasps the American shackle will not fit, and the reverse is also true, so check the hasp eye before substituting. Keying systems differ between the two as well, so a like-for-like key match should not be assumed.
18) For marine or salt-air exposure, is the A1307KA the right pick or is there a better option?
The A1307KA carries a black anodized aluminum body described for harsh outdoor conditions, with a boron alloy steel shackle. For salt-air service two peers target that duty more directly: the ABUS T84MB/30 Nautic has a black sleeve over a 1-17/64 inch body with a 13/64 inch shackle diameter and is sold in a three-pack, and the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body. The Nautic is a much lighter lock; the G8R is the heavy-duty stainless option.
19) How do these ship if I am buying padlocks for a whole facility?
The A1307KA packs 6 to a shelf pack and 24 to a master carton, which is the count to work from when you are standardizing a run of storage units or lockers and want full cartons on one key code.
20) Is the A1307 padlock rated for commercial use or is it a residential lock?
It is built as a commercial padlock, and the intended applications American Lock lists are self-storage units and lockers, harsh outdoor conditions, and manufacturing environments. The solid aluminum body, boron shackle and pick-resistant 5-pin cylinder are aimed at that duty rather than a garden shed.
