American Lock AME-A1365KD BLU 2KEY – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the KD in American Lock A1365KD mean, and can I get these keyed alike instead?
KD is keyed different, meaning every lock in the order comes with its own unique key. That is what you want for self-storage units or tenant lockers where each user gets one key and one lock. If you need one key to open the whole set, the A1365KA is keyed alike. A1365MK is keyed different under a master key, A1365KAMK is keyed alike under a master key, A1365KZ ships zero-bitted for a locksmith to key on site, and A1365UN is uncombinated. Same 2 inch aluminum body on all of them, only the keying changes.
2) Can the A1365 be rekeyed to my existing American Lock keyway, or do I have to keep the factory keys?
It is a rekeyable lock. The A1365 uses a 6-pin APTC14 rekeyable cylinder, so a locksmith can pin it to your existing bitting rather than adding another key to the ring. If you are setting up a new system from scratch and want to cut your own, order the A1365KZ zero-bitted version instead and pin it on the bench.

All three are the same 2 inch wide solid aluminum rekeyable body; the difference is shackle. The A1365 carries the short 1-1/8 inch shackle with 3/4 inch width and 3/8 inch diameter. The A1366 and A1367 are the longer shackle versions of the same lock, which is what you want when the hasp is deep, the chain is thick, or you need to reach through a gate bracket. Each is offered in the same keying variants (KD, KA, MK, KAMK, KZ, UN).
5) I need a padlock for lockout/tagout, is the A1365 the right choice?
Not really. The A1365 is a solid aluminum security padlock built for self-storage, lockers, outdoor gates and manufacturing environments, with a 3/8 inch boron shackle sized to resist cutting. Lockout/tagout wants a lighter, non-conductive or insulated body and a thin shackle that fits a scissor hasp. For that, the ABUS 72/30 anodized aluminum safety padlock (1-1/4 inch body, 3/16 inch shackle), the ABUS 74/40 insulated safety padlock (1/4 inch shackle), or the ABUS 76/40 plastic-covered aluminum core padlock are the safety-lock options.
6) I need padlocks that run on the same key system as the Sargent cylinders in my building. Is the A1365 it?
No. The A1365 is rekeyable on its own 6-pin APTC14 cylinder, which is an American Lock platform, so it will not pin to a Sargent or Schlage key system. If you need the padlocks on the same keyway as the rest of the building, look at padlocks from that brand instead: Sargent 758 (key retaining) and 858 (non-key retaining), or the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core version with a 2 inch stainless shackle, and the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle.
7) What is a good alternative to the American Lock A1365 aluminum padlock for a facility that keys everything on a small-format interchangeable core system?
