American Lock AME-A3105CYMK BLK 2KEY – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an American Lock A3105CYMK padlock take the same SFIC core as the rest of my building's keying system?
The A3105CYMK is built for a standard small format interchangeable core, so it drops into an existing SFIC system the same way your cylindrical locks and exit device cylinders do. The cylinder is the (CY) Standard SFIC keyway, and 16 interchangeable core keyways are offered so the padlock can be matched to the keyway your facility already runs. Pull the core with a control key and the padlock is rekeyed without touching the lock body.
2) What does the MK in A3105CYMK mean, and how is it different from A3105CYKA?
MK means keyed different under a master key: every padlock in the order gets its own change key, and one master key opens them all. That is the setup for a maintenance lead who needs access to every tool crib and locker while each tech only opens their own. A3105CYKA is keyed alike, where every lock in the group shares one key. There is also A3105CYKAMK (keyed alike plus a master), A3105CYUN uncombinated, and A3105CY keyed different with no master above it.
3) Will a 1/4 inch shackle padlock fit through my locker hasp and self-storage latch?
Shackle diameter is 1/4 inch with a 3/4 inch clearance between the legs and 1 inch of vertical clearance, so it needs a hasp opening that takes a 1/4 inch pin and a staple no more than 3/4 inch across. That is a standard fit for self storage units, lockers and tool cribs. Measure the staple width on gate chain or heavy padlock eyes first, because a 3/4 inch shackle width won't straddle a thick gate hasp.
4) I need a padlock body but my locksmith is supplying the core. Is there a version without a cylinder?
Yes. The A3105WO line is the same solid aluminum body supplied without a cylinder, so your locksmith pins and installs the SFIC core. It comes in the same keying arrangements, including A3105WOMK for keyed different under a master. If you need a longer shackle on the same platform, the A3106WO and A3107WO are the taller shackle versions, also supplied without a cylinder.
5) What should I buy instead if the 1 inch shackle on the A3105 is too short for my gate or hasp?
One inch of shackle clearance won't reach around a chain or a thick gate hasp. Within the same American Lock aluminum family, the A3106 and A3107 are the longer shackle versions of the same body. Across brands, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Sargent 858 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a stainless shackle.
6) Is the American Lock A3105CYMK the right padlock for lockout tagout?
No. It is a keyed SFIC padlock built for facility security, keyed different under a master so a supervisor can open any of them. That is the opposite of what lockout tagout requires, where only the worker who applied the lock can remove it. For safety lockout use a dedicated safety padlock such as the ABUS 72/30 anodized aluminum safety padlock or the ABUS 74/40 insulated safety padlock.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the American Lock A3105CYMK if I need a removable core padlock on a Sargent keyway instead?
The Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock is the peer to look at. Like the A3105CYMK it takes a removable core rather than a fixed cylinder, so it keys into an existing masterkey system. The differences are body and shackle: the A3105CYMK is a solid aluminum body 1-1/2 inches wide with a 1/4 inch diameter shackle standing 1 inch tall, while the 60-858-2 carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. If the hasp clearance on the opening needs the taller shackle, the Sargent covers it; if the environment calls for a lightweight corrosion resistant aluminum body, the American Lock does.
8) I need an aluminum padlock for lockout tagout, not for a keyed building system. What should I use instead of the A3105CYMK?
Look at the ABUS 72/30 anodized aluminum safety padlock from the 72 Series, or the ABUS 74/40 insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder. Both are purpose-built safety padlocks. The A3105CYMK is built around a small format interchangeable core on a standard SFIC keyway, which is what you want when the padlock has to join the same keying system as the doors, and what you do not need when each worker carries one personal key. On size, the 74/40 matches the American Lock at a 1-1/2 inch body width and 1/4 inch shackle diameter, while the 72/30 is narrower at 1-1/4 inches with a 3/16 inch shackle.
9) Is the Schlage KS23D a drop-in substitute for an American Lock A3105CYMK?
They are not interchangeable. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock from the 20 Series with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, and the A3105CYMK is a solid aluminum body with a 1/4 inch shackle. The shackle diameter difference alone decides it at the hasp: a hasp or chain link drilled for 1/4 inch will not accept 5/16 inch. The other split is the cylinder. The A3105CYMK uses a small format interchangeable core on a standard SFIC keyway, so a locksmith swaps the core with a control key; the Schlage is a different keying platform.
10) Is an aluminum body padlock strong enough for outdoor and industrial use, or should I go with steel or brass?
Solid aluminum resists corrosion and doesn't spark, which is why these turn up in utility work and around fuel and gas. The 1-1/2 inch body carries a hardened boron alloy shackle and a dual ball bearing locking mechanism that resists pulling and prying, and the black anodized finish holds up outdoors. Where you want a heavier metal body instead, the Medeco 5260 is a brass body padlock and the Medeco 521 G8R uses a solid stainless steel body.
11) Can I get these padlocks in different colors to separate crews or departments?
Nine lockbody colors are offered on the A3105CY aluminum padlock: black, blue, brown, clear, green, orange, purple, red and yellow. That is the usual way crews split locks by trade, by building, or by shift without relying on tags. Color is an ordering choice, so specify it with the keying when the order goes in.
12) How many keys come with each American Lock A3105CYMK padlock, and can I order extras?
Standard is 2 keys per lock. You can also specify 1, 3 or 4 keys per lock, or 0 keys per lock when the keys are being cut in house or the cores are being pinned by your locksmith. On a master keyed order those are change keys, the master is separate.
13) How does an SFIC padlock compare to a standard keyed padlock for a property with a lot of turnover?
With an interchangeable core, a tenant change or a lost key means pulling the core with a control key and dropping in a new one, in seconds, at the padlock. A conventional padlock like the Sargent 758 key retaining or the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock has to go back to a locksmith to be rekeyed or be replaced outright. The tradeoff is that SFIC only pays off if you already run, or are willing to set up, a small format core system.
14) What padlock should I specify instead of the A3105CYMK for an exposed outdoor or wash-down location?
The Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock has a solid stainless steel body and is supplied less the pop-out cylinder, and the Medeco 54515G XT is an indoor/outdoor padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter supplied with cylinder and non-key-retaining. The A3105CYMK answers the same exposure a different way, with a solid aluminum body that is corrosion resistant and lightweight. Where the difference shows up is the cylinder: the American Lock carries a small format interchangeable core on a standard SFIC keyway, so it drops into an SFIC system, while the Medeco units are on Medeco's own platform.
15) I am color-coding padlocks by crew or by building. Which options do that, the American Lock A3105CYMK or the ABUS covered padlocks?
The A3105CYMK lock body comes in black, blue, brown, clear, green, orange, purple, red and yellow, so the color is the anodized body itself and it carries a small format interchangeable core on a standard SFIC keyway behind it. The ABUS 76/40 is a plastic-covered aluminum core padlock with a 1/4 inch shackle diameter and 1 37/64 inch width, where the color comes from the cover rather than the body. The ABUS T84MB/30 uses a black sleeve over a 1 17/64 inch body with a 13/64 inch shackle. If the color scheme has to survive the same abuse as the lock, the anodized aluminum body is the one that carries it in the metal.
16) Which padlock has the heaviest shackle if cut resistance is the deciding factor over an A3105CYMK?
The Medeco 5260 in the 52 Series has a brass body and a 7/16 inch shackle diameter with M3 key technology in satin chrome, the largest shackle diameter among the peers. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F and the Medeco 54515G both run 5/16 inch. The A3105CYMK uses a 1/4 inch diameter hardened boron alloy steel shackle, 1 inch tall, matched to a 1-1/2 inch aluminum body, which is the combination that keeps it light and spark resistant for tool cribs, lockers and utility work. The tradeoff is straightforward: larger shackle diameter needs a hasp drilled to accept it.
17) Can I get a padlock with a chain attached so it doesn't get lost off the locker?
A #40 sash chain, 9 inches (229mm) long and zinc plated, can be ordered attached to the A3105CY aluminum padlock, or you can take it with no chain. The chain keeps the lock tethered to the door or cabinet, which is the usual call on lockers, valve covers and utility cabinets where a loose padlock goes missing.
18) Do I have to buy the American Lock A3105CYMK padlock in case quantities?
The A3105CYMK ships 6 to a shelf pack and 24 to a master carton, which is how a procurement buyer standardizing a row of lockers or a fleet of tool cribs should plan the count. Keying, color and key count are all specified at order time, so a master keyed group is built to your system rather than pulled off a shelf.
