1) Is the Metallics 1409ST an anchor, or is it the tool used to set one?
The 1409ST is a setting tool, not an anchor itself. It's the drive tool used to expand a 1/2-13 machine screw lead anchor once the anchor is seated in the drilled hole. You still order the lead anchors separately; the tool is sold one piece per package.
2) What size lead anchor does the Metallics 1409ST setting tool work with?
It is sized for 1/2-13 machine screw lead anchors. Setting tools are size specific, so a 1/2-13 tool will not properly expand a 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 anchor. Match the tool to the anchor thread size you are installing.
3) How do you use a lead anchor setting tool in concrete?
Drill the hole to the anchor's specified diameter and depth, blow it clean, drop the lead anchor in flush, then place the 1409ST tool into the anchor and strike it with a hammer. The tool drives the internal cone and flares the lead against the hole wall. Once set, thread in your 1/2-13 machine screw or rod.
4) Do I need a separate setting tool for every anchor, or is one enough for the job?
One tool handles an unlimited number of anchors of the same size. The 1409ST comes one per pack, which is what an electrical or mechanical crew needs for hanging threaded rod, strut, or conduit supports on 1/2-13 lead anchors. Order anchors by the box and the tool once.
5) Can I just use a bolt or punch instead of the Metallics 1409ST to set a 1/2-13 lead anchor?
No. Driving on a bolt or a random punch damages the anchor threads and usually leaves the lead only partly expanded, which is where pullout failures come from. The 1409ST is machined to bottom on the anchor's cone and expand it fully without touching the 1/2-13 threads.
