1) Can I use a drop-in anchor like this in hollow block or drywall?
No. The 1/2-13 mini drop-in is a solid-base anchor, set by expanding against the wall of a drilled hole in solid concrete. Hollow CMU, brick veneer, or any hollow or soft base will not develop the expansion it needs. For hollow block use a toggle or sleeve-type anchor sized for the cavity instead.
2) Is a setting tool needed to install the Metallics JDIA12MINI drop-in anchor?
Yes, a matching setting punch is required and is not part of the jar of 100 anchors. Drop-ins are set by driving an internal expander plug with a punch sized to the anchor, so order the 1/2 inch setting tool alongside the anchors if you do not already have one on the truck. You also need a carbide bit matched to the anchor diameter.
3) What is the difference between a mini drop-in anchor and a standard drop-in anchor?
The JDIA12MINI is the short-body (mini) version of the 1/2-13 drop-in. A mini drop-in gives you the same 1/2 inch internal thread in a shallower hole, which is what you want in thin slab, post-tension decks, or where you cannot drill the full depth a standard-length drop-in needs. If you have full slab depth and want maximum pullout, the standard-length 1/2-13 drop-in is the one to use instead.
4) What does the lip on these Metallics 1/2-13 drop-in anchors do?
The lipped version has a flange at the top that bears on the concrete surface and stops the anchor from being driven below flush when you set it. For an electrical contractor hanging strut, trapeze, or rod from a deck, the lip keeps the thread entry at the surface so the rod starts clean every time. The non-lipped style is the one to pick if the anchor has to sit fully below the surface.
